My pet bot fly emerged yesterday from its pupa. Cute looks and morbidly fascinating life history what more could a girl ask for? I froze it already but now I see I might have missed an opportunity for rare case of myiasis. Oh well maybe next time…

‘Science can and should as a community organise itself to maximise its ability to act collectively, ethically and – when necessary – politically.’ The scientific community needs to speak up – not just for the sake of science, but of human decency, dignity and morality”
I have run out of patience with the apparent silence of most US science institutions (and not just US) in the face of Trump & Musk's rampage. There are of so many facets of that, but in this column for @chemistryworld.com I talk about the assaults on inclusion.

Scientific institutions have a long history of anticipatory obedience
Societies should learn from this and speak up to support inclusion

Talk to your neighbors. Talk to your family. Talk to your friends. Tell everyone what is happening and why science matters (this is not a USA-only post, because we know this is happening everywhere)
Just talked to a friend whose spouse is a contractor for the VA. They are worried about their job and their future. But what shocked me was that they had no clue what happened at NIH, USDA, CDC, NOAA. The word is simply not getting out. The average American just doesn't know.

If you're an entomologist who lost your position in this nonsense, please message me. If you're an organization seeking a taxonomist or a broadly trained entomologist, reach out. I'm also looking for professors seeking PhD students, globally. #entomology 🧪
Today, the USDA lost experts in Psylloidea, Thysanoptera, Cerambycidae, Hymenoptera, Pseudococcidae, and Malacology. This is a devastating loss of expertise, occuring without warning. Their union's official statement on the issue can be found here: aginspectors.org/2-14-2025-a-... #entomology 🧪

40 WAYS TO DIE IN THE PREHISTORIC. Enjoy!

These illustrations were made as scale drawing for a book about prehistoric creatures. Thought it would be fun to have a bit more interaction between the animals and human figures

I guess I should introduce myself: my name is Matt & I ❤️ insects + other arthropods, nature in general, & macro photography (among other things).

I'm not a big-eyed robber fly, despite my profile pic 😂

I look forward to being here! Feel free to check out my photos: www.flickr.com/photos/76790...

This article gives me hope and shows there are endless ways to resist. Everyone’s unique contribution matters, no matter how small. Trump 2.0 gets Resistance 2.0.
10 ways to be prepared and grounded now that Trump has won
The key to taking effective action if Trump wins is to avoid perpetuating his goals of fear, isolation, exhaustion and disorientation.

Natural History museums starter pack!
ok ok I have tried to pull together a list of all the natural history museums and people who work at them!

Unsurprisingly this is very NHM London biased, so if you work at or know of other natural history museums on here then let me know! 👇

The uncountable hours I spent reading and watching political coverage and at the end I had no idea what world I was living in, I just thought I did. If I'd spent that time reading about, say, birds, I would now know an awful lot about an awful lot of birds.

I’ve had people ask me why I’m concerned about mask bans given there’s a “medical exemption”

Mask bans are a return to ugly laws that will further isolate & exclude disabled people from society.

Medical exemptions are inadequate & leave many people behind (like healthy covid cautious people) /1 🧵
Nassau County, NY Makes Masking Illegal - Why Medical Exemptions Aren't the Answer
Defendants of mask bans point to medical exemptions as proof that disabled people have nothing to worry about. They're wrong. A look at why bans are ableist, discriminatory and dangerous.

A gentle reminder that if we miss the 1.5°C target (and we certainly will), the next target is 1.51°C and not 2°C. We need to keep fighting.

Every tonne of CO₂ emitted makes the job of future CO₂ removal harder, and every 0.01°C of temperature increase makes the world more chaotic and dangerous.

Do not let your healthcare provider to gaslight you into “long covid is not real” and “all your blood tests are fine” Find someone who actually takes the time to read and stay up to date on medical research. More physicians need to think like scientists.
I'm not asking healthcare professionals to watch TV or keep up with the news. I'm asking them to read the most influential medical periodical in the world? Don't psychologise #LongCovid patients.
