Dog Day Cicada, (maybe "Neotibicen canicularis"?), found on a banner that was being folded up and placed on a tree to continue the short above-ground end of their mostly underground life. Hope you got lucky, friend. #cicada #nature #thatsabigbug

I love Intisar Khanani's books (and she's a rockin' person, too!). You should check this one out and support her Kickstarter!
Because a biracial heroine with a magical talent whose real superpower is radical compassion?

That is a force to be reckoned with.

I cannot wait for you all to join Hitomi on this next adventure!

Here's blood from a Bald Eagle (Haliaeetus leucocephalus) with lead toxicity. There were some normal and some toxic heterophils. This image has 3 normal and one toxic. The toxic one has multiple abnormal dark granules. Polychromasia is also present. #hematology #science #wildliferehabilitation

All. Of. This. I was a mediocre high school varsity athlete who worked hard and improved a lot but never got above average. Did I think my teammates who made it to state or my opponents who were better than me were cheating? Of course not because that's ridiculous. Just like transgender sports bans.
As a former child junior olympic-level runner, I have a few thoughts on the attacks on trans girls in sports. I ran for one of the most competitive teams in Southern California, and people who ran for my have gone on to become professional athletes. And these bans: they're fucking NONSENSE. 🧵

The comb on leading edge of an owl feather (this one is a Great Horned Owl) breaks up the air flow and allows for silent flight!

It's clear that the Trump administration denied due process to the migrants it banished to El Salvador *precisely because* any measure of judicial oversight would've proved their innocence immediately.

We’re Finally Seeing the “Evidence” Against the Migrants Deported by Trump. It’s Unbelievable.
The Trump admin said a soccer player had a gang tattoo. It’s a tattoo of Real Madrid’s logo.

Here's blood from a Bald Eagle that has a red blood cell without a nucleus, called an erythroplastid, and low numbers are normal (this is the only one I saw). The darker purple ovals are immature red blood cells. Two heterophils and a thrombocyte are also present. #bloodsmear #baldeagle #science

I can't stop myself taking photos of blood. Virginia opossum monocytes--often very weird. This one has a doughnut-shaped nucleus, which I see in this species but have no idea if it's normal. They do seem to have some normal anisocytosis of RBCs. #bloodsmear #40x #wildliferehabilitation #science

Uggggh, I just want @asm.org to support DEI so I can continue enjoying agar art, is that so wrong?!
@asm.org this better not be anticipatory obedience. I have 5 lab members planning on going to ASM microbe this year. I will absolutely pivot to another meeting if ASM gives in to anti-DEI efforts.
@vscooper.micropopbio.org and @mostlymicrobes.bsky.social while downloading scientist spotlights for teaching from the site; ASM has also scrubbed the entire IDEAA page including resources on LGBTQ+ scientists at asm.org/IDEAA/resources/pride-month

What's unusual about these skeletons?

...They have their penis bones attached. Most male mammals have a bone in their penis, but 19th-century curators rarely put them on display in #museums, presumably to share visitors' blushes. (I.e., they deliberately misinform visitors about animal anatomy)
