Found this nice acorn from a Swamp White Oak (Quercus bicolor) tree still attached to a leaf. #oak #nature #nativeplants
An oak leaf with rounded edges that is wider at the top, connected to an acorn with a slightly rough cap. The leaf and the nut part of the acorn are smooth and shiny. The leaf has a brown wavy insect trail in one of the large leaf lobes.

Here's blood from a Bald Eagle (Haliaeetus leucocephalus) with lead toxicity. There were some normal and some toxic heterophils. This image has 3 normal and one toxic. The toxic one has multiple abnormal dark granules. Polychromasia is also present. #hematology #science #wildliferehabilitation
A photo micrograph of a Bald Eagle blood smear. The smear shows oval-shaped, nucleated red blood cells. Most of them are pink but there are some immature cells present which are purple with a less condensed nucleus. There are also four white blood cells, all heterophils. The one in the center and two on the left (around 9 o'clock) are normal heterophils with pink, ovoid granules. The one on the right (near the 4 o'clock position) is toxic. It has darker cytoplasm, no normal pink granules, and abnormal dark purple granules.

The comb on leading edge of an owl feather (this one is a Great Horned Owl) breaks up the air flow and allows for silent flight!

Here's blood from a Bald Eagle that has a red blood cell without a nucleus, called an erythroplastid, and low numbers are normal (this is the only one I saw). The darker purple ovals are immature red blood cells. Two heterophils and a thrombocyte are also present. #bloodsmear #baldeagle #science
A micrograph of a blood smear from a Bald Eagle at 1000x magnification. There are scattered avian red blood cells which are oval with darker oval nucleus in the center. At the 10 o'clock position there is a red blood cell without a nucleus, the erythroplastid. At 11 and 2 o'clock are large, round, white blood cells with ovoid pink granules, called heterophils. The thrombocyte is at the 6 o'clock position just to the left of a larger, more purple immature red blood cell.

I can't stop myself taking photos of blood. Virginia opossum monocytes--often very weird. This one has a doughnut-shaped nucleus, which I see in this species but have no idea if it's normal. They do seem to have some normal anisocytosis of RBCs. #bloodsmear #40x #wildliferehabilitation #science

If you really zoom in, you can see proof that I saw Orcas while I was in Seattle!
