Last week, AFA along with @repchrispappas.bsky.social hosted a briefing on Capitol Hill about contaminated air and toxic fumes on commercial aircraft. This Capitol Hill briefing is a continuation of our decades-long work around contaminated bleed air.
The first crew injury report related to fume events was filed in 1952. Over 70 years later, there are still no requirements for bleed air filters or sensors for cabin and flight deck. Fume events occur when engine oil from the compressors or hydraulic fluid from neighboring systems enters the air supply system. Breathing in toxic fumes causes short- and long-term health problems for crew and passengers, including neurological issues. Historically, fume events were characterized as overreactions. Even today, airlines and federal agencies underreport fume events. AFA’s research found over 3,300 oil/hydraulic events in FAA databases over a 10 year period. The problem is systemic. Our aircraft air systems are woefully behind, which puts crew and the flying public at risk. Seals in compressor can leak oil Hydraulic lines can burst/spill Oil, hydraulic fluid can be ingested; includes from overservicing Engine wash procedure can cause oil seepage Ducts, packs hard to clean No sensors No complete bleed air filters Can’t reproduce inflight conditions on the ground Soiled ducting, packs

WASHINGTON – The American Federation of Government Employees (AFGE) applauds today’s historic bipartisan achievement as 218 members of the U.S. House of Representatives have signed a discharge petition to compel a vote on the Protect America’s Workforce Act, the bipartisan Golden-Fitzpatrick legislation restoring collective bargaining rights for more than 1 million federal workers. Earlier today, Rep. Nick LaLota (R-NY) and Rep. Mike Lawler (R-NY) provided the decisive signatures #217 and #218 to complete the discharge petition effort which launched in June. Reaching the 218-signature threshold ensures the bill will advance despite procedural roadblocks and reflects a rare and powerful moment of bipartisan unity in defense of the nonpartisan civil service. “An independent, apolitical civil service is one of the bedrocks of American democracy,” said AFGE National President Everett Kelley. “Today, lawmakers stood up together to defend that principle and to affirm that federal workers must retain their right to collective bargaining. This is what leadership looks like.” AFGE extends its deep appreciation to every Democratic and Republican member of Congress who signed the petition and demonstrated the courage to safeguard the rights of federal workers who protect our nation, care for veterans, process Social Security benefits, secure our borders, respond to disasters, and keep the government running for the American people. The union also recognizes the bipartisan Senate champions who introduced the companion Protect America’s Workforce Act earlier today, reaffirming broad congressional support for protecting union rights and ensuring continuity in government services. “Federal workers do their jobs every day without regard to politics. Today’s action honors that commitment,” Kelley said. “AFGE will continue fighting until these essential rights are fully restored, including by fighting to retain Section 1110 of the must-pass National Defense Authorization Act.”
