🚨New Working Paper🚨

"Understanding the link between heat and intimate partner violence”

Together with @juditvall.bsky.social and Laura Schmitz, we study how high temperatures affect intimate partner violence (IPV) in Spain over 15 years.

Curious about our results? This is what we find ⬇️

#Verbrenneraus #Thermodynamik

"Disseminating AI weather forecasts has an incredibly high return on investment, generating more than $100 for farmers for each dollar invested by the government.

Spreading the cost of an AI model across tens or even hundreds of millions of farmers means the per-farmer cost is extremely small."
Artificial intelligence could dramatically improve weather forecasting
An AI-based model outperformed every other in forecasting the Indian monsoon this year. This helped millions of farmers.

EU countries have cut a deal on the 2040 climate target. What worries you more: that 5 percentage points of the 90 percent reduction target can be outsourced to other countries, effectively reducing the domestic 2040 target to 85 percent, or that the start of the ETS-2 is postponed to 2028?

Two intense and inspiring months at @columbiasipa.bsky.social have come to an end!

It has been an incredibly enriching experience to immerse myself in this thriving academic community — and the kind, curious, and passionate researchers at SIPA made it easy to enjoy every day of my research stay.

6 hours 30 mins they could do from this December, with one change in Badajoz or Elvas - but they're likely not going to do though

So 🤷‍♂️

Whenever I hear about these long term plans for ES-PT rail, I wonder why they're not doing the basics with what they have right now?

We need "automated enforcement using cameras mounted on buses to capture drivers illegally blocking the bus lane. This makes them more effective, since a bus lane with cars double-parked in it is no bus lane at all."

Having suffered slow buses in NYC for the last two months, this sounds amazing! 🙌

Could not be more on-brand for a democratic backsliding story ending in competitive authoritarianism: courts controlled by the ruling party tilt elections against the opposition.

Great article from @hannahritchie.bsky.social… and the EU ETS can fund action to reduce these non-CO2 climate impacts from aviation (and from shipping - where black carbon has a GWP of 900). It’s really good that this is getting more public attention

"Eliminating a few percent of the world’s warming is a big deal when the costs are so small. It seems insane to me that such a cheap solution is sitting there, completely untapped."

We could reduce the climate impact of aviation by ≈50% in a few years, and nobody seems to be taking this seriously!
Eliminating contrails from flying could be incredibly cheap
Could we halve aviation's climate impact at a fraction of the cost of sustainable aviation fuels?

The regime's desire for authoritarianism is bottomless, but their capacity is not. Not even close.

They rely on bluster and memes to make up the difference. The threat is real, but less powerful than they say.

Freedom-loving Americans outnumber them by a lot. Communities can resist. Like this one:
This video of Chicagoans intervening to save a man from being abducted off the streets by ICE is making the rounds on Instagram.

Community action works.
