Mira Menezes—Venus has an unusually slow rotation. One way to get that rotation was that if Venus had a primordial moon, Neith, that migrated out due to tides, slowed Venus, and then was lost. #AGU24
A photo of my sketchbook, showing a pen and pencil sketch of the AGU 2024 poster by Mira Menezes. The sketch shows Venus in the center, being orbited by a hypothetical moon named Neith. The moon likely started closer to Venus, Val. Venus was rapidly rotating with a period of only a few hours. As tides operated on the moon, the moon migrated away, and the spin rate of Venus decreased. For sufficiently large moon, this eventually can decrease the rotation rate of Venus to near the presently observed value of hundreds of days. This is shown in the sketch by a rainbow spiral, showing the outward migration of the moon. In the same colors, I also show the spin vector of Venus, with a spiral in the same color palette and getting wider as the moon moves away. eventually, the moon has an encounter with a passing planetesimal and is ejected from the system. In the top right, I show a sketch version of some of their numerical models, which show the despinning of Venus due to the title interaction with this moon. For most models this takes approximately 100 million years.

The planet Uranus on a black background. The planet appears blue with a large, white patch taking up the right half. The patch is whitest at the center, then fades into blue at it expands from right to left. A thin outline of Uranus is also white. Around the planet is a system of nested rings. The outermost ring is the brightest while the innermost ring is the faintest. Unlike Saturn’s horizontal rings, the rings of Uranus are vertical and so they appear to surround the planet in an oval shape. There are 9 blueish white dots scattered around the rings. In this Webb image, Neptune resembles a pearl with rings that look like ethereal concentric ovals around it. There are 2 thinner, crisper rings and 2 broader, fainter rings. A few extremely bright patches on the lower half of Neptune represent methane ice clouds. Six tiny white dots, which are six of Neptune’s 14 moons, are scattered among the rings. Another fun thing at Saturn: its walnut shaped moon Iapetus!

Not only is it a super fun word to say, but the moon sports an equatorial mountain range running most the way around and up to 10km high.
