I return to writing!
Contributing an essay on 100 YARDS for the booklet on this beautiful boxset from Spectrum Films. Always wanted to write on Xu, one of my favorite directors, but something that also has felt bit daunting, but I think I found a great angle. Thnxs @headexposure for the opportunity🙏
Turned in my old bass guitar for a renovation, its now in better condition than when I bought it ages ago, has been collecting dust in the basement forever. Gonna lay down some riffs.

Doin #LetterboxdFriday I´ve kind of settled with that I don't watch movies like I used to, but managed to see one here and there:

Mural Crown returns and releases an album of the year contender already on 1 January!
Once again seemingly recorded from within a tumble dryer from across the hall their rudimentary metal fragments peek through...

#TankTuesday makes a suprise comeback with DER TANK (2025). Lapses into student film territory at times & shows signs of a limited budget but overall I had a good time with it, has some atmosphere, lots of fog machine & plenty of the central Tiger tank.

#Cyborguary is up and running with SIXTY MILLION DOLLAR MAN! Silly Stephen Chow hijinks, the cyborg related stuff doesn't even appear until 50 minutes in.

Favorite Action Movies of 2025:

1. Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba Infinity Castle (Haruo Sotozaki)
Structured as one long multi layered action sequence with a flashback structure within action beats telling a gripping story, emotional, huge & pure in its action movie approach.

Gonna get back to my favorite metal releases of the year if anyone is interested, & while there is some great releases I gotta note that there was a time when Black Metal felt "dangerous"/"authentic"/"real", I'm ofc talking about the problematic & Reprehensible, Graveland in particular.

After the very disappointing installments of Who finds a friend finds a treasure & Go for it! in the Terrence Hill/Bud Spencer-verse, I’m for the Hippopotamus, was a welcome return to hanging out, sharing a meal & a smackdown with these loveable characters.

Before collapsing into indie/post crap on sophomore releases, I think Tatterdemalion found a moment of balance on their debut album, balancing the black, post and ambient influences into a brief stable beauty. Both slight and quite stunning in execution

HELLZAPOPPIN (1941) feels like a rosetta stone for all strands of cinematic comedy ever since, tearing down the 4th wall with a grin, but in particular its center piece suggest the concealed lives of the servants & maids as a brimming force of life & creativity lived before scuttling back to duties.

As either fractured memories, fantasies, or both of Bond (& other pulpy spy thrillers) as directed by Raoul Ruiz & Dario Argento's love child. Cattet & Forzani keeps honing in on their formalist swagger pulp, shaping something more & more their own; seductive & assured.
I loved REFLECTION IN A DEAD DIAMOND. A stylishly and trippy ode to classic bond with giallo vibes. One of my favorites of this year.

Had never seen a Hill/Spencer movie, when I was a kid grandpa & an uncle had some VHS of theirs & I've always meant to get to em, if nothing else cross em off with my podcast. Now it finally happened and WATCH OUT, WE'RE MAD is a 5⭐ movie & probably the most Pod Hard one I've seen, like ever 😂
