I don't agree with their peer review model, but the premise here is correct. There are rules of indexing and citation counting that are keeping journals from transforming into modern publication systems.
“Journals and peer review are unlikely to change for the better if the companies that operate scientific indexes and citation databases continue to stifle innovation.”

FDA’s cancer review team overseeing breast and gynecological products has lost about 1/3 of its medical review staff and the malignant heme group will lose about 2/3 of its medical review staff—all to voluntary resignations clustered among seasoned reviewers

In an unprecedented move, the NIH will soon disinvite dozens of scientists who were about to take positions on advisory councils that make final decisions on grant applications for the US agency, Nature has learnt.

Exclusive: NIH to dismiss dozens of grant reviewers to align with Trump priorities
The move would undo years of work, leaving advisory councils understaffed, and without the full expertise needed for reviews.

Agree. At least a decade of pushing our kids to STEM only. Result: few can critically read or write, entry level computer science/coding jobs were the 1st to get cut with AI, decrease in kids wanting to be physicians.
Decades of mechanistic talk about university degrees as if they were bundles of 'skills' and 'prep' are about to be proved completely wrong (obviously). Want to get a real boost? Do History or English.

Yep. Prestige costs money to create (literally: highly-selective journals are more expensive to run in part because of their selectivity, not to mention their staff). And, if gold OA is to be the model, then author or their funders are agreeing to pay per paper for that prestige.

There's also a helpful criticism here that, if we have to constantly and meticulously double check the work of AI then is it a tool that really saves us time and effort? And, given that cost/benefit ratio, what are the actual use cases that make using it worthwhile?
