Today’s #fiberuaryChallenge is to tag a black maker for Black History Month. My choice is @jadawoodesigns.bsky.social, an indie yarn dyer in Tacoma (semi local for me). Her beautiful yarn is on my to buy when I’m next in town.

For #fiberuaryChallenge "Outside", here are some photos of my Na Craga sweater on two different beaches in Cape Breton, Nova Scotia. I'm so happy I finally have some hand made sweaters that work well to take with me traveling.

For #fiberuaryChallenge today it’s “work in progress”, so here’s my current plain sock out in the world with me. I’m on the second sock of this par and you can scroll back in my posts to see the beautiful stripes in the first one.

For the #showMeYourKnits GREYS theme, I’m wearing the pi shawl I finished in 2018, Lucca by Jared Flood. Yarn is Chatham Lace from This is Knit in Dublin (a precious souvenir from a 2014 trip).

For #fiberuaryChallenge "Mood", I've been in a spinning mood lately. I'm working on making my first skein of yarn. I've done some practicing before and now I'm working my way through 3 oz of Ashford corriedale.

For #fiberuaryChallenge "New Beginnings", here's a project I made in 2024 from reused yarn. I'd made the tank top in 2011 but never wore it (wool + silk is a bad idea for a tank top). I like it much better in the Kuutar sweater.

For #fiberuaryChallenge, Hello, it's me! I'm a knitter and sometimes spinner, crocheter, and weaver in the Seattle area. Here's a photo of me in one of my favorite sweaters (Jemima's Jumper) with my cat Wallace.

For #WIPwednesday, here are my current on-the-go socks. My custom vanilla sock pattern in Twin Sock from Timber Yarns. I bought the yarn at Tracy's Rolling Yarn shop, a yarn truck that travels around Cape Breton island.

For the last few hours of this week’s #showMeYourKnits hands prompt, here are my Soccer mitts in Hedgehog Fibers sock (color Juniper) being put to good use in Bryce Canyon National Park. Plus a bonus picture of the park.

I got on the bus home wearing my #crochet cardigan and the woman I sat next to was crocheting for the entire ride.

I didn’t say anything to her, because this is Seattle and over ear headphones are a line I cannot cross. It made me smile though.

On my needles: I just frogged sock 2 again. I’ve got one perfectly fitting sock that I finished a few months ago, but now I’m struggling to get the same gauge for sock 2. I’m determined to get these right.

For the #ShowMeYourKnits WHITES & BRIGHTS theme, I dug out a photo of the only white project I've ever knit, my first pair of socks. They were just practice socks, since I learned sock knitting, magic loop, and two-at-a-time knitting all at once, using acrylic sport weight.

So excited for the next Knitting History Forum! I just bought my ticket, so I’ll have access to the recordings even though it will happen while I’m asleep (it’s UK time and I’m in the Pacific Northwest).

Today is International Day of People with Disability so again I beg that you use Alt Text for all your photos, videos, and GIFs.

Not only does it make social media more accessible for folks who use screen readers, it also provides added context to your posts.

Researching how to keep carpet beetles out of my yarn and hand knits, and this is from the WSU extension service:

“Try not to accumulate and store large amounts of woolens or articles made of animal by-products.”

Excuse me???

* Unblocked swatch
* Measuring the blocked swatch
* Hanging the swatch with binder clips to simulate the weight of the sweater (per Amy Snell)
* Checking for color fastness

I really don't think "change needle to change sizes" is best practice for grading. You're asking the knitter to potentially compromise the quality of the fabric by knitting too loose and/or create issues with it by working it too tight. It is 100% possible to grade colourwork mitts & socks. 🧶

A knitting horror story for this week’s #showMeYourKnits: in August 2011 I knit these self-designed cabled gloves. Then I lost them 2 months later on Halloween night. The fell out of my coat pocket and I couldn’t find them the next day. I made them from the fingers up, so I lost 10 magic cast ons!
