A made-up film I've drawn a poster for. HORSE THEIVES FROM SPACE-PLANET SATURN is the title, across the bottom of the poster in alternating red and green letters. Above that, close-up portraits of the stars, drawn entirely in green except their lips, antenna, and what you can see of the costumes - they are Jane Russell (as Harriet Terrorfold) and Marilyn Monroe (as Tomsk Constance). Both have a logo of Saturn on their foreheads. There are some stars drawn around them and a horse shoe, just to ram home the horse and space aspects.

Gentlemen Prefer Blondes (1953)
A rather strange drawing on yellow paper of a publicity shot for Gentlemen Prefer Blondes. Marilyn Monroe sits in the lap of whoever the old man is in the film - although I've only drawn his top half, the lap is implied. He has a monocle and a wide open mouth for features, Marilyn and Jane Russell just have very wide, shiny white-toothed, red-lipsticked Hollywood smiles. Jane is sort of sat in mid air and her legs are coming out from behind the old man, not really attached to her. One of her legs is so long it goes off the edge of the picture and appears again coming down from the top. They're in red spangly dresses, he in a tuxedo. It's just really odd.

It's Marilyn's turn to prepare dinner for Hollywood.
Biro drawing on pink-ish paper. Marilyn Monroe strides across, in the shiny red dress from Gentlemen Prefer Blondes (although it's more pink in this picture). On one of her arms she is wearing a falconer's glove and there is (made-up) bird of prey stood on it. In her other hand is a carrier bag, blood-stained at the bottom, upon which is written "things the bird has caught".

A drawing in ink with pencil colours. A woman stands by a window frame, or some sort of rectangular hole into another place at any rate. She has highly stylised piled up hair and everything about her is shaded grey, except the drink in her huge glass, which is bright red for whatever reason. Next to her, and leaning against the frame, is a frankly rather redundant small ladder. Through the rectangle, we see a confusing mash of many Christmas trees at all angles, and baubles and stars. The woman looks at you and says, via a word bubble: oh hello, come on in, it's Christmas 1973 in here.

The door has a "37" sign and there is a patch in the facade next to the door, showing some brickwork. All of which is mere background to the focal point: huge green drippy graffiti on the side of the house that says: "Stanley Mothskull builds substandard rocking horses".

Ages since I read a new superhero book and I appear to have picked a good one to start again with. This is magnificent stuff - the best of DC's books are wildly creative in a way the films just never are.

On top of this I've drawn a slightly sinister looking Peter Rabbit: blue jacket, red tie, big eyes with no pupils, unsmiling, and long wavy arms. 59 yrs ago today, you could watch The Beatles arrive at EMI Studios, all moustached, and give absolutely no hint to a reporter about the extraordinary, unfinished song (Strawberry Fields) on the other side of those walls.
(Then, a bit later, you could watch Jonathan Miller's Alice in Wonderland.)

I don't think my origin story is any book (but it is based on one): it's the Piper At The Gates Of Dawn episode of The Wind In The Willows. I was four when I saw that, and its strange, haunted, melancholy atmosphere (and the fact my bedroom overlooked a graveyard) left a huge impression on me.
