Enjoying hardware and games from ISA to AGP graphics, with a special love for old sound cards.

I have been posting less and the reason is I had another epileptic seizure, had to raise medication, my hand tremors got even worse, and I got depressed over it.
Am officially looking for someone to help me fix some hardware.
I can't pay much, but might have vintage hardware for you instead.🧵

Craziest part is how they just clip through everything, making it suddenly a viable weapon indoors. I can't.

Okay it boots fine without the card, the card still works in the other PC, when the card is so much as connected, I hear a quiet tick-tick-tick-tick noise that I cannot quite locate, I don't know what is causing it but this is the worst and I need to find out.
Every day a new curse.
The Neoware CA2 had let magic smoke out of its previous IDE44 to dual CF adapter, so I ordered a new one, put it in and now the CF cards get detected again, it even looks as though W98SE is attempting to load, but something makes a TICK-TICK-TICK noise and the system reboots.

Can anybody help identify these three 72pin SIMMs?
I hope one of them might be 16 MB.
Each has the same amount of modules on both sides.

So, this is what the Duke Nukem 3D opening Theme (Grabbag) sounds on the Guillemot Maxi Studio Dynamic 3D - using the officially licensed 4 MB Roland sound font (GSSBK320.94b).
Recorded with Windows 98 SE's audio recorder (44.1 kHz 16 bit Stereo, 172kbps PCM).

LOL I just received my first bluesky "your account has been suspended" phishing DM.
It claims I wouldn't have access to my account and would need to go through a verification process under a link to regain access.
In a DM that I could read because I was currently accessing the account.🤡

What software do you use for capturing audio on a Windows 98 PC?
I only need the most simple, basic functionality, although MP3 or OGG format would be nice.
I'll record more sound fonts the day after tomorrow.

Practically nothing has ever surprised me less.
Spread the word; the Rockstar C-suite are scum. If you have to play GTA 6, yar-har-fiddle-de-dee it. Don't give a penny to this company.

I thought the 72pin SIMM module I installed was 16 MB, not 4.
But it's very much possible I just jumpered it wrong, for the card has a jumper for 4 vs 16 MB.
It's so late I probably won't open up the PC again before getting some sleep, though.

Need you guys to be my unartifical intelligence: what does "discreet portmanteau" mean when it comes to comparing different sound cards?
Machine translations definitely do not get the context.

So, this particular Guillemot Maxi Sound 64 Dynamic 3D (PCB picture from amoretro.de) has loaded an officially loaded Roland sound bank per default.
Shrunk from 4 MB to 1 MB, it features practically the same sounds as a Sound Canvas, just more compressed.
But we can load higher quality banks!

So, my Neoware CA2 thin client is currently waiting for a new IDE44 to 2x CF adapter, but come Monday I can transplant this perfect little sound card and enjoy both my favorite form of FM synthesis (yes, even over Yamaha OPL3) and up to 18 MB of soundfonts ("banks") in .94b format.

Had mail from the incredible @xavierdury.net again, with a working card only missing the PCI bracket.
And what do you know, as soon as I put it in, it instantly worked in both DOS and Windows, sadly confirming that the first card is in fact dead.
Also I had forgotten I raised the volume. Jumpscare!

Tried the same procedure in another PC with a PSU that definitely delivers the negative voltages.
Still no output, neither in Windows nor DOS.
I'm sad that the card is apparently really dead despite being recognized in the PC, but also kind of relieved that my Neoware CA2 is not the culprit.

Maybe it's my being cishet and I'm forgetting something, but at the end of the day you use pronouns for talking *about* people, so if you talked *to* them before, you probably know what a person is like, and if it's important to them they can tell you their preferred pronouns.
I'm with this!
"not assuming" becomes "everybody is they/them" which doesn't seem helpful
It feels weirdly invalidating when used in a targeted way (surprise! you actually did assume!), and when used for EVERYONE kinda seems like non-binary erasure; removing meaning from pronouns thru genericization

hot take: I think we should go back to assuming peoples pronouns. if we get it wrong, we should be corrected, say "thank you for correcting me", and not get it wrong again.

Was just told that this guy on Sister Wives held a PowerPoint presentation to his three wives why they needed a fourth one.
And it succeeded.
Must have used some spectacular WordArt, maybe that one where the word becomes sort of a three-dimensional bridge with a metallic shimmer and shadow.

I feel like I should do something with the tower in the middle.
It has a MHz display that goes up to 999 but the plastic around that panel is broken.
I'd have to glue that, polish it, then paint it over to make the repair invisible.
But what kind of socket/slot system belongs in it?

Upgraded all our 4 joycons with hall effect joysticks, for 5€ each.
Drift is gone, not sure whether they feel more sensitive or it's just the placebo effect.
At any rate, this makes our Switch 1 a lot more attractive, I'll make sure to get lots of used physical games over the next years.
