The paper by Carneiro et al. shows that places with strong labour markets also have higher equality of opportunity for kids who grow up in poor v. rich neighbourhoods.

Education also matters: LAs with better schools and less academic segregation have more equality of opportunity.
Excited about discussing regional inequalities at the Fiscal Studies symposium event next week!

We've got a star-studded lineup of @andyburnham.bsky.social, Paul Collier, Philip McCann, @lindseymacmillan.bsky.social, @amcanning.bsky.social and more.

And where it comes to formula:
- all formulas are the same by law
- the cheapest is always Aldi Mamia at £7.50 or so a tub (only own brand on the market)

Great to speak on the opening panel of the day about higher education and social mobility - improving access to higher education is one route to improve social mobility, but we also need to think about inequalities by institutions, and inequalities that persist beyond education in the labour market

I'm glad to see that the broad consensus around social mobility has moved beyond the limited focus on a handful of academically achieving disadvantaged young people 'making it', to the broader definition of equalising opportunities for all young people, regardless of background
Lots of sensible recommendations in the House of Lords Social Mobility Policy Committee report published today, including the importance of place, prevention, and a proper data strategy
