📊 What did we find?

🔸 Most of the socio-economic background (SEB) and ethnic inequalities in entry to professional occupations are driven by employer-side decisions made during the recruitment process
Delighted that our research on inequality in access to and progression within professional occupations won an award @appam.bsky.social - thanks to all who stopped by for excellent conversations. And thanks Seattle, it’s been a blast. See you next time!

👀 Important new project led by one of our Senior Research Fellows and funded by @nuffieldfoundation.org

Paul will be looking at changes in student employment and how this helps or hinders their life chances.

Congratulations Paul, we’re looking forward to learning more from this work
Very excited to announce that from January I will be leading a new research project funded by @nuffieldfoundation.org, using LEO data to investigate the consequences of student employment, whether positive or negative.

Jo Blanden (CEP), @GillWyness.bsky.social (CEP), @Opmc1.bsky.social (UCL) and @LindseyMacmillan.bsky.social could explain why private school pupils are more likely to end up in higher-ranked HE courses than peers with similar grades.

Students of private and grammar schools are over-represented in elite universities, but only part of that is explained by better grades.

I regularly come back to this graph when talking to people about how we’re in a really different world now.

And important to note that these are for EHCP only. There will be many more young people with SEND for these conditions, but no EHCP
Essential @nuffieldfoundation.org funded note by @theifs.bsky.social on England's SEND system - highly topical this autumn. Here's the growth in the number of EHCPs over the last decade+.

We should not accept 1 in 8 of our 16-24 year olds shut out of learning or earning. Dreadful for young people, economy & society.

Purposeful government can make a difference - but it will require learning lessons, real focus & new resource. Me in the @financialtimes.com

A level results are out! And as many have reported, there was an overall improvement in the proportion of students gaining the top grades.

But its not good news for everyone: with London & the South East continuing to pull away from the rest of the country, and boys slightly ahead of girls.

What a journey! It’s not even about the win, although 😭. It’s my girl (who hates football) putting on a kit and playing with a ball all week. And my boys cheering on the team more than they even do the mens. These girls are changing the world and I am delighted to watch the influence they have 🦁🦁🦁
