New in #PNAS, temp-driven increased seed production in European beech caused 28% reduction in annual tree ring increments since 2005. Important for European forests and good example using long-term data (43 yr) of how past does not predict future #forestdynamics.

The #EU Deforestation & Forest Degradation Regulation is due to come into force in 2026. It will ban products made using raw materials from deforested areas on the EU market.
To this end, research needs to come up with indicators to differentiate between preserved & degraded forests.
