New paper on the relationship between forest quality in South-east Asia + mammal occupancy from camera-traps
Good forest matters #conservation #mammal #Asia

4/ Our study highlights the urgent need to protect and restore dense, tall-canopy forests for long-term mammal conservation.

3/ Species characteristics helped to understand species responses --> Habitat specialists and large-bodied species showed the strongest positive responses.

2/ 77% of species were more likely to occupy forests with higher canopy cover, height, and less disturbance. Only 5% responded negatively.

1/ 📷 We used data from 61 species, 627 camera-trap sites, and 11 landscapes in SE Asia to study how mammals respond to forest quality

🌳🐘 Forest quality matters 🐘🌳
Mammals in #tropical #forests from Southeast Asia thrive in higher-quality forests—those with dense canopies, tall and old trees. Read our new open-access paper👇

New on European conservation science:

Free-ranging domestic cats occur deep in the forests, with >10% occupancy even 1 km from homes. Their presence near edges suggests persistent risks to biodiversity well beyond suburbs.
