I used to review for alt-chi where you could discuss new/experimental ideas with each other and the authors. Really enjoyed it (preferred it to the straitjacketing convention of CHI papers)...

Perhaps this is a good reason for open publications, so people can check the referenced papers directly. I checked out AI 2 years ago to find new papers and was shocked it created the exact right sounding paper titles and summaries by people I knew. But fake papers. It was uncanny in a creepy sense.
