Hi all! I'm a philosopher at VU Amsterdam. Over the past 6 years I've been leading the ERC-funded project 'The Social Epistemology of Argumentation'. With some amazing young scholars, we've been developing more realistic accounts of argumentative processes. I'll post some links to articles below.

Agreed! My favorite dialogue by Plato 🤩

Haven’t seen it yet 😬

To be clear, I'm very much in favor of philotainment! The fun can be deep, and the deep can be fun 😀

Chatting with a colleague today, we came up with a neologism (maybe it already exists): PHILOTAINMENT, i.e., philosophical entertainment (or entertaining philosophy).

Some examples of philotainment that comes to mind: the series 'The Good Place', maybe 'The Matrix', Slavoj Žižek. Other examples?

Cool! I'd love to hear what you think of the paper if/when you read it 😊

Brandom has been a major influence on my thinking for over 15 years. But as I became more interested in the entanglement of discursive practices with politics and power relations, I moved away from idealized approaches such as his GOGAR towards more 'realistic' accounts of argumentative processes.

"Brandom’s inferentialism relies on a highly idealized account of discursive practices of giving and asking for reasons, which deviates considerably from concrete, real-life practices. Just in time for Xmas 😀 My paper on the absence of sustained discussion of power relations in R. Brandom's inferentialism is out! "Who Gets to Play? Power in the Game of Giving and Asking for Reasons". Abstract 👇

How do mathematical proofs really develop? This #OpenAccess chapter revisits Lakatos’ proofs and refutations, showing how dialogue, challenge, and cooperation shape mathematical practice and why his ideas still matter today. bit.ly/4ai5Ojo @cdutilhnovaes.bsky.social #philsci #philsky #booksky

I don’t think so, I love Eurovision! But it’s time for Israel not to be allowed to participate anymore.

At some point, the whole Eurovision thing won't be viable anymore, if a few more countries drop out. C'mon, other countries, grow a spine!
Please share!

For once, the Netherlands making the right choice.

Done, thanks!

Does anyone have institutional access to this awesome-looking volume? My library doesn't have it, and I want to consult two of the chapters (the one on Anna Julia Cooper and the one on Jane Addams). Any help would be gratefully received 😊

"For me, marriage is a form of state authority and coercion that I will not endorse through my participation."
As someone who has once partaken in the institution (now divorced), I feel the same way. Also, it's historically a patriarchal institution that cannot be fully unburdened from its history.

"Perhaps this is behind the burgeoning genre of opinion pieces in which a rightwing man complains that women don’t want to date him. Often enough, he is an avowed libertarian, leaving it a mystery why he does not simply accept the workings of the free market." 🤣

I was just in a workshop on mathematical understanding in Princeton last week; this point came up pertaining to mathematics, but it generalizes to other areas of inquiry.

Indeed! What also happens is that the masters move on to something *else* that they claim is mysterious & requires ingenuity (now that their previous skills have been democratized by automation), so as to reaffirm their superiority. It's a recurrent phenomenon with novel disruptive technologies.

On this, I love this paper on justified exclusions in mathematics, focusing on justly excluded cranks. Which doesn't mean that there can be no false negatives, but it's a matter of workload management for the community.

Naturally, I got in touch with the student to encourage them to pursue a Research Master’s in philosophy ☺️

That delicious feeling of marking a truly outstanding exam ✨ I've been teaching this course (History of Analytic Philosophy, 2nd year BA) for 6 years; I've had some great students before, but this one is simply off the charts! This student is a true philosophical talent 🤩 #happyteachertoday

Of course you are right that the far right, and Wilders in particular, continues to have a firm grip on media & electorate in NL. But compared to the last elections, there's at least a bit more pushback. I also found this article on the profiles of voters interesting 👇
