I got the chance to see some of these results ahead of time and am excited to see them in print!

Very well done study, cleverly measuring impact of lower cost-sharing for vulnerable patients
Eric Roberts and @joefigs.bsky.social led a groundbreaking new study on Medicaid and Medicare, out today in NEJM. I’m lucky to have been a part of it.

Medicare saves lives. But is it enough to save lives of the most vulnerable Americans? The study suggests no; Medicaid still matters. (1/11)
Loss of Subsidized Drug Coverage and Mortality among Medicare Beneficiaries | NEJM
A total of 14 million Medicare beneficiaries receive the Low-Income Subsidy (LIS), which reduces cost sharing in Medicare Part D. Losing the LIS may impede medication access and affect mortality. U...

Ten years have elapsed since Will Manning left us.

Early career health economists not familiar with Will and his work might benefit from knowing the significant and enduring contributions Will made to our field.

Very thoughtful study and important results to show how cost-sharing of drugs directly affect mortality… and why, if and when, we get the price of drugs right, there shouldn’t be any need of cost sharing..

Given that the new Pope hail from Chicago and is a mathematician, I can’t help but share a favorite article by a Chicago Nobel Laureate on his foray into divinity using mathematics!!

I know a lot is going on right now, but presuming CMS continues to allow its data to be used for research, this VRDC transition is happening at some point.

I am sorry but the survival benefits of coffee are really conservative if you consider the confounding!

The most favorite word in economics “Perginal Curfus”

Apparently not in that database.. so more likely to be be an error.

Most likely a decimal error…

This cannot be true .. there is only one person in the whole of PSU getting above $1M

We’re experiencing perhaps the worst flu season in 25 years, with severe cases also rising, and young children and seniors faring the worst. One in six of all ER visits in the 0-17 age groups are now for influenza.

🚨 How does physician altruism shape ties to the pharma industry? 🚨

@basucally.bsky.social, Jing (jingliuw.wixsite.com/mysite) & I link experimental and admin data to show that less altruistic physicians receive higher industry payments and respond more to financial incentives in prescribing:

HHS spent $33B is funding (98%NIH) in 2023. With current average indirect rate of 30%, seems like a $4B funding shock coming to universities in the US!

I return, I hope total NIH budget is raised by at least that much & certain F&A items allowed to be budgeted under direct costs with justification!

And don’t be fooled by the fact the NH industry runs on a thin profit margin. Ashvin Gandhi and Andrew Olenski’s excellent work shows how NH industry tunnels nearly 70% of its profits and keeps them hidden!!
