Antisemitism is a lot like Qanon child abuse conspiracies in that there’s this real and bad phenomenon and, parallel to that, what can only be described as a large scale mass psychosis about a mostly fictional version of the same phenomenon

Each one of us is endowed with the free will and inner strength to attain that completeness and holiness. But, like the letter zayin, we not only have the potential for holiness but also for evil. Each day, each moment, we do battle with the zayin weapon. Our lifetime is made up of these battles.

Our anniversary newsletter included an editorial about the moment today's Jewish left finds itself in amidst both growing antisemitism & its instrumentalization for repression, a changed class composition, and the role of Jews in American (& European) society. It is republished below
One year ago, a small group of diasporist Jews came together to spearhead a new Bundist literary arm, not unlike those that existed at the height of the Bund in the 20th century. Der Spekter, we decided, would be fully independent from the International Jewish Labor Bund itself so as to maintain editorial independence and efficiency. We are immensely proud of the unique space we have created to help uplift progressive visions for a Judaism beyond nationalism and capitalism. We have shared music, poetry, interviews, original essays and reporting, original Yiddish translations, and historical Bundist content that reads as if it could have been written yesterday. As we contemplated the editorial for this special edition, we kept coming back to one question: can the Bund really be revived? Or are current efforts at reviving the Bund simply a practice in nostalgic cosplay? Shouldn’t the Jewish left be adjusting its efforts to the needs of the current moment? The situation of the Jewish people has changed dramatically since the founding of the Bund in 1897. While antisemitism is undoubtedly on the rise, the world remains a much safer place for Jews than it was when the Bund was initially created. It is also far more complicated as defending Jews from antisemitism has become a pretext for the repression of other peoples, particularly Palestinians and immigrants in the United States. It is clear that in the U.S. today, Ashkenazi Jews have been accepted into American hegemonic whiteness, and a majority have become middle class and professionalized. Many ostensibly liberal Jews remain willing to check their liberalism at Zionism’s door, falsely labeling all criticism of Israel “antisemitic.” Zionist Jewish organizations’ rhetoric and lobbying on this definition of antisemitism have successfully influenced national policies, contributing to the criminalization of pro-Palestinian protest we are now witnessing around the world in the name of “fighting antisemitism.” These are all factors that have seemingly shrunk the potential Bundist constituency to a minority of a minority — hardly a population that could reach the level of impact of the original Jewish Labor Bund. But the revival of the Bund is not just an idea we are writing about in this newsletter. As we have shown through our recurring series “Diaspora Dispatches,” local Bund chapters are active in the U.S. and in Europe and are confronting the challenges listed above. Their organizing, initiated within a framework grounded in the Bund’s pillars of doikayt, khavershaft, and Yiddishkeit through activist leadership, solidarity campaigns, and cultural events, should serve as inspiration for future Bundists around the world, as well as for the growing Jewish left in general. And on this platform, Bundists are talking through these ideas with one another, such as in Zach Smerin’s continuing series,“Bundism Today,” in which he is laying out a vision for a new Bundist path forward in the 21st century. The effort of leftist Jews to revive the Bund must also be viewed as a beautifully Jewish thing to do, akin, perhaps, to reliving our escape from bondage at Passover every year: there will always be additions, subtractions, adaptations and interpretations to these age-old traditions, yet time is an expression of our resistance to forsake our history. This is in line with the concept of zachor, of remembrance: that only by looking back can we move forward. Our Bundist ancestors knew this well. As is written in Di Shvue (The Oath), the anthem of the Jewish Labor Bund (and translated from the original Yiddish by musician Jordan Wax for this edition): That we’ll recall the path that our ancestors paved Dismantling the systems that keep us enslaved Together, together in every age We’ll lift again the tear-stained flag of love and of rage We swear again, we swear again, we swear again.

A reminder that calling out Israel about their genocide of Palestinians is NOT antisemitic.

I'm Jewish, and I think it goes against Jewish tradition to *not* call it out. "Zachor" (remember) and "never again" are phrases used by Jews specifically about the Holocaust. Yet here we are.
