[Excerpt from Chapter 4 of "Sidewalk Games" (by me):] There’s a bunch of photographs of me with Grandma. There’s one that I can see in my head if I close my eyes tight and think about it. The photo is black and white, which means it’s really a bunch of different shades of gray, but in my head I see it in color, and I wonder if I’ve got any of the colors right. Teddy and I had an argument once, because I said I could tell which colors were which on TV, even though it’s only in black and white, and he said that’s impossible. But then we looked at the cover of a Hollywood magazine at the barber shop and it turns out I was right, Lucy’s hair *is* red, not dark yellow like Teddy thought. Teddy still doesn’t believe that I can see the colors in the black and white TV shows, but that’s okay. I’m not sure I can either. Maybe I just heard someone say that Lucy’s hair is red once, so that’s how I saw it. [Continued excerpt from Chapter 4 of "Sidewalk Games" (by me):] In the photograph of me and Grandma, I’m a really small baby, and I’m wearing a fuzzy thing that looks like what a fighter pilot would wear if he was really small, because it’s one piece like a shirt and pants and socks all stitched together, and even though it’s white with dim gray pictures on it, I think that I see that it’s light yellow with light blue stars and circles and lines. Grandma is holding me on her lap and sitting on a wooden chair with a tall back that we don’t have anymore, but in the photo, the chair is in the corner of the den, which I can tell because of the wood paneling behind it, which hasn’t changed. The den looks funny to me without all of Grandpa’s empty bottles. [Continued excerpt from Chapter 4 of "Sidewalk Games" (by me):] Grandma is very tall, and she has her hair all put up so it makes her look even taller. And I think I see that her hair is light brown, though Mom told me it was already gray when that photograph was taken. She reminds me of Mom, but she has Aunt Gladys’s nose, which is long and sharp like a bird’s beak. It’s Grandma’s eyes that remind me of Mom, because they look like they’re smiling even though Grandma isn’t smiling in the photograph. And Mom looks like that, because I don’t see her smile a lot, but her eyes are almost always smiling when she looks at me. They’re crinkled up the way your eyes crinkle up when you’re smiling.

[Excerpt from Chapter 8 of "Confessions from the Scene of the Crime" (by me):] The coat waited patiently, if dourly. It hadn’t slumbered in a plastic bag for decades to be repeatedly interrupted by neurotic detectives and their droll trilbies. “Yeah. Uh. So. Neigh *who*...? What did the old man say?” Charlie prompted. “He wasn’t old, then,” the coat reminded him. “Black hair, kinda curly, with some big bushy chops that weren’t a real popular style just yet. He was skinnier, too. Not skinny. Just not as round as he got, down the road. Anyways. He smiles and says the same thing back, but a little different. ‘Nǐ hǎo,’ he says. ‘Wǒ Zhōngwèn bù hǎo...nǐ shuō xiōng yá lì yǔ ma?’ “The other fella shakes his head. ‘Ngo mh ming—ngo hai Hoeng gong. Nei sik mh sik gong Gwong dung waa?’ Our boy’s smile shrinks, an’ he shrugs. No dice, he didn’t catch a word of it. The other fella thinks for a second and tries in this shaky, thick accent: ‘English?’ [Continued excerpt from Chapter 8 of "Confessions from the Scene of the Crime" (by me):] “Kovacs smiles bigger. That’ll do, he tells the other fella. They both got accents, but they pick through ’em pretty easy. Leastways, they’re communicating. Kovacs introduces himself: János Kovacs. The other one’s Liu Han Yin. Got a habit of pushing his eyeglasses back up his nose when he talks, though there ain’t no sign of ’em sliding off.” “Liu Han Yin?” Charlie rubbed his jaw, poking his tongue into his cheek like he could dig memories out of some stray brain matter in there. “So this *is* in China?” “Not China,” said the coat. “Chinatown.” Charlie’s hat perked up. “Right here in New York?” it asked, surprised. Charlie got a strong sense of the old coat eyeballing his hat the way Great-Grandpa eyes unruly munchkins who think they know what it was like back before the Big War. “Lotsa places got Chinatowns, son,” the coat admonished the hat. “All you need’s some Chinese an’ a bunch of folks who ain’t square with ’em. Not New York,” the coat went on. “The other end of the world. Back then, still fulla dust and dirt—people were a mite more scarce.

WIP Snip - E. Vanek After that, I kept my mind firmly in the animal thoughts of path and forest, sun and moon. I was a hunter and a damn good one, born and raised, so fucking act like it. Life became: move until you can’t, find shelter, rest, move again. A dance as familiar as swallowing. As I traveled south, I glimpsed more cleared land through thinning trees, roads widening and branching, and homestead colors multiplying on trail-posts. This was fast becoming settled country, which meant the big Rift had already claimed some lives. I wasn’t traveling toward some neophyte trial; this was serious. The pulsing, unholy hum was closer now, could feel it even when I wasn’t trying, a dark throb like a rotten molar. How long? How long had I felt evil in my own bones? I couldn’t remember a time without it.

Amber waves shone as liquid gold leaving a trail down Ferdinand's back as the wind swept it to and fro, caressing him in a way Hubert could not-well not yet. A caress was more suited to a well established relationship, not one that began the month prior. Officially, Hubert fulfilled his promise to put his compliments into writing and slipped the letter through the gap in the door to the Prime Minister's office, the impassioned visit he received in return had cemented their new status. Though, Hubert would argue their relationship began the moment they began preparing the other's drinks, perhaps even further back if it were closely inspected. For now, Hubert was content to take his place by Ferdinand's side, to know the look in his eyes for the affection it truly was, it was more than he had ever hoped to be possible. Leaning against the railing of the ship, Ferdinand turned his attention away from the boisterous currents and greeted Hubert with a smile far too wide and far too fond. "Does Edelgard fare well?" Ferdinand asked with a curious tilt of his head. Were it a different location or a different time, perhaps Hubert would worry about exposing a weakness of his emperor's, but the ship's crew came personally recommend from Petra as serving her well in her many trips between Fodlán and Brigid during the talks for independence, alongside their efforts in maintaining naval contact between Adrestia and other nations during the war. As it was, Hubert simply lowered his voice as he spoke. "Not particularly. I thought the sea would prove a problem so I brought aboard an old sailor's concoction for sea sickness found in the volume I procured in the market this day week. It will take some time to work, but she requested to be left to her own devices." A short huff of laughter escaped Ferdinand's lips. "You are ever so prepared for all possible scenarios, did you procure enough so that I may secure a dose of it?" Eyebrows raised in shock, Hubert stumbled for a moment to create an answer. "I thought you enjoyed the sea but I did secure an extra dose should you require it," "I jest, I jest!" Ferdinand waved away the concern that caused Hubert's forehead to wrinkle.

As I popped off the carton lid and began shoveling mint chocolate chip into my face, he gave a small chuckle. “Hm?” I hummed, my mouth full. “This reminds me of the first time I took you fishing,” he said fondly. I furrowed my brow, not sure how consolatory ice cream made a path to fishing. “What do you mean?” I asked, taking another giant spoonful. Whit took his own spoonful of ice cream as he contemplated. “You must have been four, and I was- well, I was young… Anyway, I was working at the academy so that I wouldn’t have to leave the village on missions, but I still felt guilty about not spending enough time with you, so I decided to take you fishing. I had actually expected you to get bored quickly, but you were surprisingly into it—you were a pretty easygoing kid; thanks for that.” “Mm,” I said noncommittally. “I didn’t blossom into anxiety until adulthood.” “Huh,” Whit half-chuckled, taking another thoughtful bite here and there as he continued his story. “You caught a few fish—I may have helped a bit—and you were having a great time, but then, when you went to cast the line again, the hook got caught in your thumb.” “Agh!” I gasped, reflexively curling my fingers around my thumb and holding that against my chest. “I don’t remember that!” “I’m glad,” he replied. “You were in pain, and you wouldn’t stop crying for at least half an hour. It was hard to see. It wasn’t that bad, though—it didn’t bleed too much, it just took a quick bandage to fix. I took you back home, and we sat at the kitchen table and had mint ice cream until you felt better.” “Well, that’s nice,” I said, smiling softly. “It was,” Whit agreed. “It is.” He kissed my head. “Plus,” he continued, “once you remembered that you had caught several fish, and that we got to eat them, you couldn’t wait to go back out and fish again.”
