Your best plan might be to wait until next spring. Olives react well to aggressive pruning, but you want to get the timing right. Early spring, before they flower, is best.

For an olive, you want to prune it into a winecup of Y shape so that there's plenty of light in the middle.

I grew some winecup clarkia/godetia (clarkia purpurea) this year. They're pretty but so small -- the flowers are about a half-inch across.

A very common flower with a long bloom time but no less beloved by me, as I looove seeing it around: purple poppy mallow (Callirhoe involucrata)! Also called winecup mallow for the very dark wine-like color of the flowers. The root is edible and has several different medicinal uses.

Other things finally opening as well, the winecups are blooming and the Rocky Mountain Purple Penstemon are lovely right now. This Coral Canyon Twinspur is a new addition and super cute, and the daisies that were here when we moved in are just wonderful.
Winecup blooms, simple six petaled cup shaped hot pink flowers with white centers, next to their medium green spiked leaves. Behind it is a native Colorado 4 o’clock. A stand of Rocky Mountain purple penstemon with deep royal purple cone shaped flowers, many to each stalk, accented with white on their beards. Behind the stand are Siberian iris, Columbine past their bloom, and a native rabbitbrush. Coral Canyon Twinspur, a delicate sage green plant with tiny stems of deep bubblegum pink flowers. It’s small but has many buds. A huge stand of white daisies next to sage abd thyme almost done blooming. A pontinella bush covered in yellow blooms is behind it. Speria, choke cherry, and more roses are closer to the house near a bench and bird watering dish. To the right is rue, valerian, and chamomile.

Apparently it’s winecup week in my mind, so here’s two #photos from this weekend of this glorious #perennial #wildflower. They bloom most of the summer. And their leaves stay vibrant green except for maybe two months in the winter.

Bush's Poppy Mallow is blooming for the first time in my front garden. This is just one plant, but it sprawls. Native to scattered locations in Oklahoma, Missouri, Arkansas and Kansas. Callirhoe bushii. #nativeplants #gardening 🌱 #oknativeplants #magentamonday

A flower bed with scattered Bush's poppy mallow flowers coming up over an area about six feet in diameter, so that it looks like several plants. Other plants are blue mealycup sage, yellow daylilies, and coreopsis 'moonbeam'. Also, I left Iowa off my list of states, but this winecup is native in one county there.

My native purple poppy mallow (Callirhoe involucrata) is starting pop. Keeps over-flowing the bed & the driveway so I have to cut it back a lot but it responds well to pruning. Proud to say I started it from seed 3 yrs ago.
