Reminder that Starbucks’ CEO made 6,666x more than the company's median employee in 2024.

This was the widest CEO-to-Worker pay gap in the entire S&P 500.

And we're supposed to believe Starbucks can't afford to bargain a fair contract with its unionized workers?

Air Canada, union clash despite government pleas for deal to avert Saturday strike
By Allison Lampert MONTREAL (Reuters) -Air Canada and its unionized flight attendants remained at odds on Friday, despite government pleas for both sides to return to bargaining to avert a strike that would upend travel for tens of thousands of passengers. Canada’s largest carrier has said it expects to cancel 500 flights by the end of the day, ahead of the planned Saturday strike, leaving some 100,000 passengers scrambling for alternatives. Flightradar data showed Air Canada had cancelled 27 flights as of 10 p.m. EDT on Thursday (0200 GMT on Friday). The carrier’s 10,000 flight attendants are gearing up to strike just before 1 a.m. EDT on Saturday over stalled contract talks on union demands for higher wages and compensation for unpaid work. A strike would hit Canada’s tourism sector during the height of the summer travel season and test the ruling Liberal government under Prime Minister Mark Carney, which has been asked by the carrier to intervene and impose arbitration. Air Canada and its low-cost affiliate Air Canada Rouge normally carry about 130,000 customers a day. Air Canada is also the non-U.S. carrier with the largest number of flights to the U.S., despite recent cutbacks in travel there from Canada due to trade tensions. Air Canada, which has also given notice that it will lock out its flight attendants, has ceased negotiating, said the Canadian Union of Public Employees, which represents the cabin crew. Canadian Jobs Minister Patty Hajdu has repeatedly urged both parties to negotiate. Air Canada’s Chief Human Resources Officer Arielle Meloul-Wechsler said on Thursday the carrier was "available to bargain at any time on the condition that the negotiation has substance." On Thursday night, Air Canada and the union clashed over an agreement to avoid stranding thousands of passengers abroad when the strike is expected to begin on Saturday. The deal would have delayed the walkout for cabin crew who were away from their home base, until they returned with their passengers on Saturday. Air Canada said on X that an additional 25,000 passengers would be stranded after the union rejected that deal, adding that double the usual number of flight attendants did not report for work on Thursday night. But in a bulletin to members, the union said it supports the deal, which failed because Air Canada said it would not honor its members’ collective agreements when they fly back on Saturday with their passengers. The flight attendants’ contract ceases to apply when the strike begins on Saturday, the union said. But in their latest contract negotiations, flight attendants in North America have sought compensation for hours worked, including for tasks such as boarding passengers and waiting around the airport before and between flights. Boeing hit by strike as union rejects deal, shares slip
Investing.com -- Boeing was hit by a strike on Monday as roughly 3,200 machinists from IAM District 837 began taking action after rejecting the company’s second contract offer. Jefferies said in a note that the strike, which began at 12 a.m. CT on August 4, affects around 2% of Boeing’s total workforce. They explained that it involves employees who manufacture fighter jets, including the F-15 and F/A-18, as well as other defense products. IAM 837’s rejection follows a seven-day cooling-off period that began July 27 after the union turned down Boeing’s first proposal. In a statement, union leader Tom Boelling said members “have spoken loud and clear, they deserve a contract that reflects their skill, dedication, and the critical role they play in our nation’s defense.” Jefferies said Boeing’s latest offer included a 20% general wage increase over four years, with 8% in year one and 4% each in subsequent years. They added that the proposal also offered a $5,000 ratification bonus, more time off, and pension enhancements. The deal would have brought average annual pay from $75,000 to $102,600, costing Boeing (NYSE:BA) about $70 million, including bonuses. The latest offer also included a $0.50 per hour attendance bonus and eliminated controversial alternative workweek schedules. The strike marks the second in less than a year for Boeing after Local 751 machinists walked out in September 2024. That dispute ended with a fourth offer in November, which included a 38% wage hike and a $12,000 bonus. Shares of Boeing edged lower Monday, currently down around 1.3%, as investors assessed the potential impact of the disruption on defense production. Don't miss out on the next big opportunity! Boeing’s contract offer rejected by union members
(Reuters) -Union members who assemble Boeing (NYSE:BA)’s fighter jets in the St. Louis area have "overwhelmingly voted" to reject the company’s contract offer on Sunday. Boeing’s proposal, which was sent on Tuesday to more than 3,200 members of the International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers (IAM) District 837, included a 20% general wage increase over four years and a $5,000 ratification bonus, as well as more vacation time and sick leave. "The proposal from Boeing Defense fell short of addressing the priorities and sacrifices of the skilled IAM Union workforce," the IAM union said. Boeing did not immediately respond to a Reuters’ request for a comment. Boeing’s defense division is expanding manufacturing facilities in the St. Louis area for the new U.S. Air Force fighter, the F-47, after it won the contract earlier this year. With valuations skyrocketing in 2024, many investors are uneasy putting more money into stocks. Air Canada grounded as striking union defies order to get back to work
By Allison Lampert, Promit Mukherjee and Gertrude Chavez-Dreyfuss MONTREAL (Reuters) -Air Canada’s fleet of hundreds of planes remained grounded on Monday morning after striking flight attendants refused a government-backed order to get back to work and called on the airline to return to the bargaining table. The carrier, which normally carries 130,000 people daily and is part of the global Star Alliance of airlines, had planned to start ramping up operations on Sunday evening, after a labor relations board ordered the union to return to work and start binding arbitration. The union said no, setting up an almost unprecedented standoff with the Canadian government, which had requested the back-to-work order. The Canadian Union of Public Employees, which represents 10,000 Air Canada cabin crew, had pushed for a negotiated solution, saying binding arbitration would take pressure off the airline. The attendants are striking for better wages and to be paid for work on the ground, such as boarding passengers. They currently are only paid when planes are moving, sparking some vocal support from Canadians on social media. CUPE invited Air Canada back to the table to "negotiate a fair deal," calling the order to end its strike unconstitutional. The airline said it would delay plans to restart operations from Sunday until Monday evening and described the union as illegally defying the labor board. The government’s options to end the strike now include asking courts to enforce the order to return to work and seeking an expedited hearing. The minority government could also try to pass legislation that would need the support of political rivals and approval in both houses of parliament, which are on break until September 15. "The government will be very reticent to be too heavy-handed because in Canada the Supreme Court has ruled that governments have to be very careful when they take away the right to strike, even for public sector workers that may be deemed essential," said Dionne Pohler, professor of dispute resolution at Cornell University’s Industrial and Labor Relations School. Another option is to encourage bargaining, Pohler said. The government did not respond to requests for comment. On Saturday, Prime Minister Mark Carney’s Liberal government moved to end the strike by asking the Canada Industrial Relations Board to order binding arbitration. The CIRB issued the order, which Air Canada had sought, and unionized flight attendants opposed. The previous government, under former Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, intervened last year to head off rail and dock strikes that threatened to cripple the economy, but it is highly unusual for a union to defy a CIRB order. The CUPE said its rejection was unprecedented when such an order was made according to rules, known as Section 107, that the government invoked in this case. Travelers at Toronto Pearson International Airport over the weekend said they were confused and frustrated about when they would be able to fly. Italian Francesca Tondini, 50, sitting at the Toronto airport, said she supported the union even though she had no idea when she would be able to return home. "They are right," she said with a smile, pointing at the striking attendants. The dispute between cabin crews and Air Canada hinges on the way airlines compensate flight attendants. Most, including Air Canada, have traditionally paid them only when planes are in motion. In their latest contract negotiations, flight attendants in both Canada and the United States have sought compensation for hours worked, including for tasks such as boarding passengers. New labor agreements at American Airlines and Alaska Airlines legally require carriers to start the clock for paying flight attendants when passengers are boarding. American’s flight attendants are now also compensated for some hours between flights. United Airlines’ (O:UAL) cabin crews, who voted down a tentative contract deal last month, also want a similar provision. Don't miss out on the next big opportunity! Boeing’s St. Louis union workers reject latest offer and will strike on Monday
(Reuters) -Unionized workers who assemble Boeing (NYSE:BA)’s fighter jets in the St. Louis area rejected Boeing’s latest offer on Sunday and will strike at midnight on Monday, the International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers union said. "IAM District 837 members ... deserve a contract that reflects their skill, dedication, and the critical role they play in our nation’s defense," the union’s Business Representative Tom Boelling said. Last week, Boeing sent a new contract offer to the union with some minor compensation changes that would benefit senior union members, according to the company. The offer also kept current overtime policies, which Boeing had proposed modifying in the last contract offer. The union had rejected the previous offer, saying that the offer was insufficient. Boeing did not immediately respond to a Reuters request for comment outside regular business hours. Boeing’s defense division is expanding manufacturing facilities in the St. Louis area for the new U.S. Air Force fighter, the F-47, after it won the contract this year.
