Saturn5 use the same technology that was developed in previous projects. It had launch issues but not full destruction. And it flew only 14 times.
Falcon9 use also the same technology. It has roughly 1 failure vs 500 success.

I doubt Merlin has anything in common with the F1 engine of the Saturn5, other than the fuel cycle (RP1).
