I installed a piece of video software called Frigate to run some RTSP cameras on our bird feeders. In addition to a variety of actually useful features, it has an "AI" to recognize objects. The AI is.... uh... well.....

Anything that does RTSP/ONVIF combined with an NVR (could be BlueIris, AgentDVR, Frigate, ... writing to your storage).
Personally quite a fan of Reolink.

with these cheap tapo cams it's very easy, you just set up a username and pw on the app, then connect with VLC via "media stream" and put in rtsp://xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx/stream1 followed by the username and pw!

I know better than to put my NVR on the web but I'd like to have a minimal OS proxy to be able to view it remotely at times. I was thinking of Alpine Linux or even OpenWrt running Nginx with the RTSP module. Any thoughts?

I just resurrected some Neos Smartcams that were sitting in a drawer. Flashed with Thingino firmware (supports a lot of cameras). Now has RTSP and ONVIF streams so can be used in #HomeAssistant

I followed this guide on YouTube which is dead easy.

Are there IP cameras without AI stuff anymore? I just need a decent >8M camera with a good sensor and standard RTSP streaming
Hints?

would y'all like to watch dev, chatting, and gameplay live streams from me?

i'm thinking of just doing an rtsp stream to my server. maybe like live.pupper.dev and that way it's not going to twitch.

i would shill my patreon every 30 minutes or so lol

Symynelec P6(日本版Gosulub G6)みたいな。

RTSP was not designed for that use case. You gotta reach for something like WebRTC for those kinds of things, even LL-HLS is not low latency enough for real time stuff.
March 13, 2025 at 9:59 AM
Yeah, RMTP is usually very slow. RTSP works fine, but if I recall, you have to use the TCP version.

Don't get me wrong: I would LOVE if the buffer size on libVLC wasn't so big, as that sets the lowest possible number one can get to be too large for realtime stuff. On average, I get 2 seconds.

@samueljohnson Ok, C110 is cheap and seems to do RTSP. Is this right? And not too hard to provision and turn off or block cloud afterwards?

if not, i'll simple set up an aws or azure rtmp repeater.

#rtmp #rtsp, and #nginx (ok, and #pfsense) are seriously badass and i couldn't design or make these much better if i tried...

... and as a very, very good engineer, this is a pretty hefty compliment (if i'm allowed the egotistical moment)
