#relicensing
The second era, of relicensing and of consolidation under mostly trade-association foundations (like the LF and its children), are a product of ZIRP ending and of post-Heartbleed organizing causing an influx of funding, mostly in the form of developer labor.

"As has been happening for years, the U.S. could continue to lose gigawatts of power as hydroelectric facilities shut down rather than absorb the high costs of relicensing — especially with cheaper competition from gas, wind, and solar." From @alexckaufman.bsky.social via @canarymedia.com
US hydropower is at a make-or-break moment • New Hampshire Bulletin
For nearly a century, the Kelley’s Falls Dam in Manchester, New Hampshire, generated as much as 2,400 megawatt-hours of electricity per year.

I would be shocked if it happens, just given the state of album sales in general & the monumental task of relicensing 500 titles. Maybe some specific titles here and there.

Digging into @geekygirldawn.bsky.social’s paper “The New Dynamics of Open Source: Relicensing, Forks, and Community Impact”

Love it so far and as I read the intro, I am also very exhausted by the sheer level of fear-based scrambling we’ve seen from vendors.

No they just replaced the runtime fee with all this relicensing. We were super wary at the time since we aren’t strictly making a game, but we never imagined Unity would get to decide who our clients are AND charge us for them. Just gross. 🤮

Linebender in October is now published: linebender.org/blog/tmix-10/ .
The big news is that resvg has moved into the Linebender organization. In the short term, our goal is to keep the maintenance of the project going, including related crates. As part of the migration, we're relicensing from... 1/2

Nope it’s to support relicensing

I am against mandatory copyright licensing and price fixing, as exists in US copyright law for music.

But as long as we're going to have it, it makes sense to extend it to relicensing inclusions in works switching delivery formats, to avoid this sort of cultural damage.
I remember finding a copy of DONNIE DARKO with many of the best songs replaced by generic versions and covers; and that movie's soundtrack was *crucial* to its mood. :-(

Always assumed they were sloppy when acquiring the rights originally. Such a shame.

I don't entirely agree with the take that Redis relicensing to #AGPL means the #SSPL has lost; to me, it's more of a question of timing of Redis' move, as opposed to MongoDB's original move to the SSPL. More here: findthethread.blog/Licentious-L...

But Continue is Apache. Since MIT~~public domain, you can release the whole thing as Apache (which they've NOW done).

You can also keep the apache code in a box and apache 2.0, while relicensing the MIT stuff as whatever.

Think that's what they tried to do? Legal.

But folks can still get mad.

Amazon river dwellers are fighting to rein in the massive Belo Monte dam, which has sapped the flow of water along a vital stretch of the Xingu River.

With the dam now up for relicensing, they see a rare opportunity to restore the flow.

DEIS Comments filed on Xcel Energy's desire for more dry casks, enough to last through relicensing of the Prairie Island Nuclear Generation Plant. Given policy and players, the PUC will approve. We really need a low-dose radiation calculation redo.
