🌿 Our next #InvasiveAlienSpecies is Crassula helmsii, the New Zealand Pygmyweed.
It can rapidly overgrow ponds through asexual reproduction and does not die back in winter.
🌱Due to its persistent growth, it outcompetes other plants for light and resources, potentially lowering water oxygenation.

As you're into bees, I noticed that the invasive and much maligned New Zealand Pygmyweed was covered in bees today in the draw down zone at Siblyback. I didn't recognise the species but think they were solitary species of bee.

The minute flower of New Zealand Pygmyweed. Swathes of it coating the draw down zone at Siblyback Reservoir Cornwall today, an invasive plant, though it had lots of solitary bees on the flowers.

Two new species for me at New Lount NR today. Red Piercer on it's larval food plant, St John's Wort and New Zealand Pygmyweed smothering the ground on the edge of the main lake

The lake was carpeted with Stonewort, mainly, ?Opposite (Chara contraria) but also ? Fragile (C. globularis). There was quite a bit of the invasive alien Nuttall's Waterweed (Elodea nutallii) & more worryingly, some sprigs of New Zealand Pygmyweed (Crassula helmsii). @bramblebotanist.bsky.social 5/6

Came back home after going to my hometown for a few days for thanksgiving, and returned to this lovely beauty 🥺

It had been so sad looking and small when I left, even when I would give it some water before (I think it just needed a lot more). But ah! It looks like it perked and grew in a few days 🥹

More stormcast progress, but according to my phone I’ve successfully captured the essence of the Pygmyweed. It’s all I’ve ever wanted.

iPhone says “ ice plant” and “pygmyweed.” I don’t think so, but I do see sprouts.
