What if we imagined intellectual life as a peasant woodland, a source of many useful products emerging in unintentional design? The image calls up its opposites: In assessment exercises, intellectual life is a planta- tion; in scholarly entrepreneurship, intellectual life is pure theft, the pri- vate appropriation of communal products. Neither is appealing. Con- sider, instead, the pleasures of the woodland. There are many useful products there, from berries and mushrooms to firewood, wild vegeta- bles, medicinal herbs, and even timber. A forager can chose what to gather and can make use of the woodland’s patches of unexpected bounty. But the woodland requires continuing work, not to make it a garden but rather to keep it open and available for an array of species. Human coppicing, grazing, and fire maintain this architecture; other species gather to make it their own. For intellectual work, this seems just right. Work in common creates the possibilities of particular feats of in- dividual scholarship. To encourage the unknown potential of scholarly advances—like the unexpected bounty of a nest of mushrooms—re- quires sustaining the common work of the intellectual woodland

The following key question can now be asked. Why, even before the discovery of NCSM 40000, did a scientific consensus consolidate so quickly around the hypothesis that all Nanotyrannus specimens are juvenile T. rex, especially given the well-known short-comings that should, at least, have dictated more caution?That’s a question perhaps more suited to historians or sociologists, but fascinat-ing, if uncomfortable, issues abound. For example, some advocates for the validity of Nanotyrannus do not have advanced degrees or are not employed by universities or museums, raising the spectre of the role of influence, elitism and the protective ivory tower of academia. Other factors to consider are the related issues of commercial fossil collecting and the ethics of studying fossils that are in pri-vate hands rather than public museums. Many specimens relevant to this debate were commercially collected and remain privately... held, and many of these have come to attention thanks to social media, auction catalogues and television documentaries. The ethics policies of some professional societies and journals oppose the publication of studies about specimens in private collections for valid reasons, such as issues relating to access and reproducibility of results11, although there is the conflicting ethical concern about wilfully ignoring relevant scientific data12. All of these issues have affected the Nanotyrannus debate, but it’s also probable that the consensus emerged quickly simply because it was so useful to finally have what were deemed juvenile T. rex specimens, despite the persistent concerns of a minor-ity of scientists. Given the investment in the consensus view, that side is unlikely to go down without a fight, but this exceptionally researched study by Zanno and Napoli puts Nanotyrannus on a solid foundation.

I do not think that is a good business proposition. You might say give $150,000 for the preparation of the plans to the man who wins; you might say give $10,000 to the next man whose plan was second in the estimation of the commission, and $5,000 for the third; but I do not want to leave it in the power of any commission, however high it may be, to pick out some favorite somewhere in this competition and make a contribution to his finances ad limitum.

What I am saying now is that the best solution to the problem of homosexuality is one which is mod-eled on the solution to the problem of religious differ-ence, namely, a radical tolerance for homosexual ob-ject-choice, whether as a segment of an individual's sexual existence or as a full commitment to homosexu-ality as a way of life. I suggest that we view homosexuals as a minority group, and begin to seriously consider giving them the full legal rights and social privileges that we have finally given to some minority groups (e.g., Roman Catholics) and that we talk about giving to others. This means, among other things, we will have to: (1) abolish the penalties that now exist for certain kinds of sexual relations between consenting adults in pri-vate; (2) end police activity against homosexuals, in all its forms, including use of decoys and harassment of gay bars and other homosexual meeting places; (3) cease firing government employees (including members of the armed forces) because they are thought to be homosexual; (4) encourage private in-dustry to cease similar treatment of homosexual em-ployees. To carry this analysis to its utopian conclusion, we would see the end of the gay world as a hidden, de- viant subculture, lurking in the unhappy interstices of the larger society. Instead, we would simply see ho- mosexuals and heterosexuals and bisexuals within our social world, all living their lives without having to endure persecution. Is this all a utopian dream? Is it really possible? Frankly, I don't know. Our society, like most others, is very slow in changing social attitudes, especially ones which go as deep into the hearts of the populace as do feelings about sexuality. Still changes are occur-ring. During the past decade both England and Illi-nois have abolished age-old statutes prohibiting ho-mosexual men from having sexual relations in private. While such legal changes are only a beginning, they are a necessary beginning, and they do indicate a greater degree of tolerance in the society as a whole. There are other encouraging signs. Homosexuality is now being discussed in popular magazines, on tele-vision, in the sex education courses that are develop-ing in our schools. Many are discovering that homo-sexuals are real people, not rare oddities of fun, and that perhaps they should be treated with human dig-nity. I cannot say where this will lead or how soon (if ever) the changes I advocate will occur. Most of what I can do to help I have already done, here in this volume.

On July 13, 1878, Harvey G. Eastman died – and according to his hometown newspaper, the President of Eastman's National Business College was mourned by the people of Poughkeepsie like the way they mourned the death of Abraham Lincoln (e.g. a massive, public outpouring of grief.)
Seldom has an item of intelligence respecting an individual in either public or private life produced such a sensation as the announcement of the death of Hon, Harvey G. Eastman, which was made on Saturday afternoon last. The public had been in a measure prepared for it by previous reports of his illness, but otherwise the feeling might have been compared with that which prevailed when news of President Lincoln's assassination burst upon the people at the close of the war. As has been stated, the receipt of the news here produced a profound sensa- tion, and expressions of sorrow and re- gret were heard from every one. The flags of the city were placed at half-mast, and almost immediately preparations were made for draping public and pri- vate buildings in mourning. On Sunday the death of the Mayor was alluded to in most of the churches, and during the fol- lowing days the work of draping build- ings continued till nearly the whole city seemed to be hung with black.

We are seeing a consequent boom in what some people are calling, infuriatingly, a stayca- tion. Let us be forensically clear about this. Going to a five-star hotel on a pri- vate Cornish cove is not a staycation. Nor is taking your ten-berth motor cruiser for a summer's boating on the Norfolk Broads. These luxurious holidays are not some dreadful, constrained ordeal. They are, quite simply, not going abroad. A stay- cation is taking a week off work to clear out the garage, go to the tip, watch old Eal- ing comedies and then have a barbecue.

The Group of Thirty Formally described as a ‘Consultative Group on International Economic and Monetary Affairs’, the G-30 is, in the language of its own documents, a ‘private, nonprofit body composed of senior representatives of the pri- vate and public sectors and academia’. Founded in 1978 with a grant from the Rockefeller Foundation, its aim has been to ‘deepen the understanding of international economic and financial issues, to explore the international repercussions of decisions taken in the public and private sectors, and to examine the choices available to market practitioners and policy makers’ (G-30, 1998). The group is comprised of 30 members at any one time. Mem- bers have strong credentials in the fields of economics and finance and are affiliated with national regulatory and supervisory agencies, international organizations, major banking institutions, and high prestige Economics departments (the Appendix provides a full list of G-30 members over time along with key affiliations during the membership period). Members may interact in other fora, conferences or symposia and have multiple affilia- tions and memberships. The G-30 itself, however, offers them a rather unique environment in that, by focusing on members as individuals and not in relation to their formal roles and positions, it has institutionalized a pattern of interaction that goes beyond public and private, forging social bonds with membership stability through career changes.

Norwegian Wood, Murakami's first novel, was the nar-rative keystone of the Murakami oeuvre, in that it was all about an appallingly hip, soulful, and sensitive Japanese dude, with tremendously good taste in clothing and mu-sic, who is way too good for this sorry world, and is right on the verge of deciding to kill himself-but then, his girl-friend obligingly kills herself first. Only people who weren't Japanese could be crass enough to find this story >> >> line funny. From a Japanese perspective this was a tale of total sexual, political, and existential authenticity There had been one crucial, Suntory-whiskey-and Gekkeikan-sake-drenched night in Goruden Gai when, over the drunken bellowing of the sweating, tightly packed crowd in an ultrahip bar the size of a phone booth Makoto had been getting this crucial narrative point across to Starlitz. Starlitz had listened with great care. It was always worth talking to Makoto. The guy was a great listener, he had astounding ears. Makoto's ears were the best-looking things on his head. Makoto could hear things that scarcely any human being on earth could hear. So Starlitz had remarked: "Makoto, I definitely see why the girlfriend has to go. That is a totally dramatic and moving resolution of the story line. By hanging herself she's validating the hero's unspoken anguish. But let's just assume for argument's sake-that the protagonist has a higher-level grasp of his existential situation. He knows that he is an arty intellectual having a lethal identity crisis in his highly conflicted, ultracommercial Japanese society So, as an act of deliberate perversity he arranges that the girlfriend doesn't kill herself. Instead, the girlfriend is well fed, properly exercised, looked after, respected, and pampered in every conceivable way. "Reggae, that would be a lousy novel." "Of course it would, but listen to me, man: Norwegian Wood is only forty-five thousand words long. That is a fucking short book, Makoto. If you swallow that fish-hook, you and the girlfriend are gonna choke on your own vomit like Hendrix and Joplin. But if you somehow break that master narrative, you're gonna be rolling in royalties when every other tortured artist who is the voice of his fucking Japanese generation is stuck in a fucking cremation urn." This was a rather involved debate, but Starlite's Japanese always improved radically when everyone around him had been drinking heavily.
