This is so depressing. I am actually anticipating and rooting for NGRST. :(

Additionally, near-IR magnitudes and color-color diagrams are effective in distinguishing SN Ib/Ic progenitors from possible companion and/or background objects. This study suggests that the JWST and the NGRST can play a crucial role in advancing our [6/8 of https://arxiv.org/abs/2503.10947v1]

The first Trump Administration tried to defund and shutter the NGRST not once but twice, despite the sums involved not even qualifying as a rounding error in terms of the US federal budget.

It's not efficient. But it tracks when you hate women so much you don't even want one's name on a satellite.
As part of their plan to GUT the science mission at NASA, Trump and Musk want to cancel the Nancy Grace Roman Space Telescope — a critical project that is on time, under budget, and nearly finished.

They want to flush those taxpayer dollars down the drain. How is THAT efficient?
This critical NASA telescope is nearly finished — but Trump and Musk want to cancel it

The NGRST will be great but could have been much greater without the heated mirror. Redshift > 10 science is crippled by the mirror thermal emission, a heritage from the "free telescope" that uses 60 year old spy satellite technology.

transfer code CMFGEN. We then assess the detectability of SN Ib/Ic progenitors using near-IR filters from the JWST and the NGRST, comparing the results to the capabilities of the HST. Our analysis indicates that near-IR observations significantly [4/8 of https://arxiv.org/abs/2503.10947v1]

Hubble doesn't have to do this because it can push against the Earth's magnetic field. NGRST is too far away since it's at the L2 point

Right now, the Trump administration is looking to cut 50% of NASA's Science Mission Directorate budget, canceling the NGRST launch and jeopardizing other science missions like Hubble.

I can't see NGRST being cancelled, given how it's too close to the finish line. The hammer will probably drop on something else.

That is not correct. The HST mirror was purpose built (wrong, as it turned out) for astronomy. The ‘spare mirror’ is much more recent and is going in the NGRST, to be launched in the late 2020s.
November 2, 2024 at 2:10 PM
Do you have a source for NGRST using the Hubble spare mirror? I know it was a rumour in the 2000s, but all the sources I can find say they're actually using reworked NRO mirrors, because they're 1/4 the mass of the Hubble mirrors.

Does ESA even have a rocket that could deploy NGRST to its intended orbit? She was originally intended to fly atop a Falcon Heavy and I'm not sure Ariane 64 has the required performance to get such a large payload all the way out to SEL-2
