One of the key lessons of science is YOU DO NOT KNOW WHAT YOU DO NOT KNOW. The world's greatest neuroscientist is as much a layperson as you or I when it comes to physics.

As a neuroscientist, I’d suggest there is a profound disconnect between what *some* computer scientists think is representative of “intelligence”, cognitive ability, or descriptions of consciousness from some in AI work.
LLMs are not how neural systems process information, nor how brains function.

Dr. Benjamin Carson, once America’s preeminent neuroscientist, a true visionary and genius in his field, was given a quick once over by Trump who immediately was like, “Now there’s a guy who knows a thing or two about Section 8! Give him HUD, he’ll probably be fine, or not, don’t really care.”

And you don't even have to be a neuroscientist to know that! Artificial "intelligence" is to intelligence as a flight simulator is to flying an airplane.

my career as a cognitive neuroscientist has been me becoming increasingly disillusioned and cynical with my own field and others, while watching a right-populist attack on the idea of science itself, knowing it's wrong and dangerous, but not feeling like we have much credibility to defend ourselves
I don't like saying this, but I think social "sciences" increasingly has to be put into quotation marks

Me: What brings you to Woods Hole?
He: I’m a neuroscientist, working on octopuses.
Me: I’m a neuroscientist too! I study patches of human cortex that do ridiculously specific things.
He: Oh like that Kanwisher stuff?
