My parents were Southern. They were very clear about the functions of various sorts of small and medium talk. These sorts of low-weight interactions with people outside your intimate sphere are part of our responsibilities to community and neighborship.

Was told "wouldn't you want to care for the part you look at?" And, yes, I would...except I'm moving. So, selfishly, I'd like to do minimal work/money to protect stuff that I'm on the hook for, but not worry about stuff I'm not. Which is fine but poor neighborship

I guess what I'm really lamenting is the lack of actual social communion between people based on likeminded social and ethical values, rather than mundane hobbies, y'know? I want people who support good social justice causes but also have each other's backs for no reason other than neighborship.
