Visual Traditions. Bolca Fossils between Drawing and Photography FLORIKE EGMOND ABSTRACT Using the rich Massalongo archives in Verona, and comparing coloured drawings of the same palaeontological material in this collection with the Massalongo-Lotze photos of Bolca fossils, this essay investigates to what extent the new technique of photography really entailed a new – possibly more objective – way of representing fossil items in a scientific manner. To better understand these visual continuities and discontinuties, the essay explores the longue durée of the older visual traditions, starting in the 16th century, that governed the scientific representation of naturalia in general and of stones and fossils in particular. Sign on a stone wall in the Swiss Alps describing the “Building Walls Breaking Walls” project, where young people from Switzerland, Ireland, Northern Ireland, Israel, and Palestine come together to rebuild dry stone walls to preserve heritage and biodiversity. www.natkultur.ch www.bwbw.ch English translation: Young people from Switzerland, Ireland, Northern Ireland, Israel, and Palestine are preserving the cultural heritage of the Gryon region from 2021 to 2025. The "Building Walls Breaking Walls" project was founded by the NatureCulture association and gives young, engaged individuals the opportunity to contribute to the preservation of the environment and cultural heritage of the Vaudois Alps. Through collaborative work in nature, the project also creates a space for meeting, exchange, and new experiences. Living Boundaries and Biodiversity Building dry stone walls preserves an age-old and traditional construction technique, while also making an important contribution to the protection of natural diversity and the landscape. A dry stone wall represents a mosaic of different habitats within a small area. These walls are built without mortar or concrete. They thus offer valuable shelter for animals and plants: lizards, snakes, and amphibians, as well as insects, spiders, and shrews, find ideal refuge, hunting grounds, and wintering sites in the crevices. Ideally, there is a strip of grass along the side of the wall, which serves as a protected transition zone between the wall and the meadow for small animals and provides welcome food for insects and birds. Acknowledgements The NatureCulture association thanks everyone for their kind support and for the broad and varied contributions. Ecocritical and post-anthropocentric studies have challenged the long-established dualism between nature and culture. Proposing new ways of understanding such relations, from “vibrant matter” (Bennet 2010) to “naturalism” and “animism” (Descola 2005), such research urges a reconsideration of the historical entanglements between human and nonhuman dimensions. This panel wishes to engage with these debates by foregrounding the architectural traces of such interconnection: where life becomes form, and ecosystems are refigured as structures. Building as a form of human manipulation participated in a process of material as well as conceptual conversion: it turned animate, ecologically embedded life-forms into static, structural components of human spaces. Architectural structures thus emerge as hybrid entities, natureculture bodies that resonate with memories of the former lives of their natural materials. We invite papers exploring these and related questions across all geographic areas during the premodern period (from antiquity to ca. 1750). Papers may investigate the architectural “afterlife” of living materials, with particular attention to how such transformations were understood, represented, or ritualized in historical contexts. What were the ecological, spiritual, or symbolic implications of turning the natural environment into the built “environment”? How did premodern societies conceptualize or mediate the shift from life to lifelessness, from ecological actor to architectural object? And how might examining these material histories illuminate broader understandings of human-nature entanglements in the premodern world? We particularly encourage contributions considering multiple materials or contexts from a micro-historical or comparative perspective. Further topics may include: The architectural use and symbolic transformation of wood, coral, leather, bone, shell, stone or other once-living (or understood-to-be-living) substances;
