The Network and Distributed System Security Symposium is a platform for researchers and practitioners to exchange information on network and distributed system security. The symposium focuses on practical aspects of security, including system design and implementation. A recent presentation at the symposium introduced Mysticeti-C, a DAG-based Byzantine consensus protocol that achieves lower bounds of latency. Mysticeti-C achieves high resource efficiency and censorship resistance by avoiding explicit certification of DAG blocks and using a novel commit rule. This protocol achieves optimal latency in the steady state and under crash failures, with a latency improvement of 3 message rounds. The authors also extended Mysticeti-C to Mysticeti-FPC, which incorporates a fast commit path for transferring assets with even lower latency. Mysticeti-FPC minimizes the number of signatures and messages, resulting in better performance and resource efficiency. The protocols were evaluated and compared to state-of-the-art consensus and fast path protocols, demonstrating their low latency and resource efficiency. Mysticeti-C achieved a WAN latency of 0.5s for consensus commit while maintaining a throughput of over 100k TPS, and its integration into a major deployed blockchain resulted in over 4x latency reduction.
