I sold it to a restorer when I was 4 months pregnant with WarriorTeen (so 18.5 years ago), and bought a Toyota Sienna which had airbags and hookups for child carseats.
The Microbus had seat and shoulder belts, but only 2/40 A/C (the side wing windows blew shut driving on the Interstates.

I didn't know about the "drop a Porsche engine into a Microbus" subculture until I worked with a sound recordist in CA who was the most mild-mannered guy, a Tai Chi devotee vegetarian, who hooned through his weekends in his 911 powered VW bus. ;-)

My family's first car that could fit all of us was a 1970 VW Microbus, which I inherited and drove until I couldn't get it fixed anymore.

Total death trap in retrospect. The heater was such crap that we had to keep our gloves and coats on inside the van on winter ski trips.
I would not let any of my kids drive on on the freeway. We drive an EV.

And the Fiero was a model of safety compared to the VW micobuses and beetles that are STILL popular. Look at a WV Microbus. Your front legs are 6" from the front of the road, the engine is in the back. I grew up with one of those. Total death trap in a front end collision.

A pasada tarde, un coche botouse fóra na N-550 entre Guindiboo e Santa Cruz, en Montaos. O condutor resultou ferido.
Esta mañá, tamén en zona con curvas, un microbús (na imaxe) envorcou na AC-223 preto do Campelo, en Xanceda (Mesía). Descoñécese se hai danos persoais.
