Lil crabber wrapping up a snack. Many species of crab spider hang around flowers waiting for unsuspecting prey. This spider picked a marvelous flower to call home and it’s one of my favorite spidey photos. #Arachtober

Mecaphesa asperata, the northern crab spider, is a species of crab spider in the family Thomisidae, found in North and Central America, and the Caribbean. It is a species of the ‘flower spiders’, so-called because they generally hunt in similarly coloured flowers for visitors such as bees and flies.

As a Mexican hat (Ratibida columnifera) awaits small pollinating insects, a crab spider (Mecaphesa sp.) also waits. Photo taken at Tijeras Pueblo on June 20, 2025.

Now that I have the fisheye macro working it's just practice, practice, practice and making tweaks with that kit and my regular macro kit before heading to South America later this year. Can't forget regular macro can produce beautiful and compelling shots!

I spent several years working to ID Mecaphesa crab spiders from color pattern and in the process learned that color patterns significantly overlap between species, though there are some patterns that are reliable within certain regions. I don't think the work has been done for Xysticus.

A male crab spider waits to give a an unsuspecting pollinator a hug. Crab spiders don't build webs, while some will wander to catch prey most species are ambush predators. 🧪🌿 #invertebrate #arachtober

I'm still looking for submissions for the Entomology Society calendar. The calendar is Insects of the World so they only take one arachnid, but I'm still loving this shot as a candidate. Little crabbers wrapping up some take out.
