Young grizzled mantis derped around for me this afternoon as I was about to leave after my walk. Perky grabby flail-y child 🤎

today I learned fully about labouls, ectoparasitic fungi which are only found growing on live insects, but do not kill the host. they're just a kind of annoying small thingie that lives in the world and propagates

A white hot dog photographed back in the winter of 2020 in Yellowstone.

We actually had two different long-tailed weasels scampering around in this spot at the same time!

Ahhh. Sometimes you just need 8 minutes of doom-free distraction, and a reminder that there is still enjoyment to be found on the internet.

Yeah that's right. It turns out that lots of parasites alter the behavior of host (or vector) species, some way more dramatically than others. Like this funky worm in the genus Leucochloridium.

If you're thinking, "that's a snail, actually" - look closer!

Pretty good article about the specifics of PRI's situation and what led to the immediate need they have from upstate NY based media.

This hidden gem Upstate NY museum with dino bones you can touch is on the brink of extinction
Officials say the museum that houses a mastadon skeleton needs to raise $1 million by the end of 2025 to avoid foreclosure.

Today's nature friend is ironically not very stealthy right here

Hey so I just read a fascinating little news article about a bird hybrid possibly caused by climate change! Not exactly great news but of interest of me because of my masters research
I've had a busy day but there's still time for #WildlifeWednesday! The original version of this thread was also posted late at night so maybe it was meant to be. Anyways, this was originally a request to talk about my master's research. So: avian hybridization!

I wanted to get a video of this ghost crab but every time I got close to their hole they scuttled back in, so I tried getting clever with it. I made a little sandcastle and shoved my phone into it, hit record, and walked away. Crab was VERY suspicious of this addition to their environment.
