Why $3 meals?
Even when adding rice or potatoes, this one doesn't provide sufficient nutrients and calories for adults and growing children (teenagers?!), let alone satisfy hunger.
Maybe they should have run simulations that showed a way for all of us to afford what is actually needed.

From comments:
Chicken drumstick =149 cal
Corn tortilla = 62 cal
Broccoli spear =11 cal
Even 4 of these meals in a day wouldn’t add up to HALF of minimum caloric requirements for adults, not to mention growing children.
Brooke Rollins: "We've run over 1,000 simulations. It can cost around $3 a meal for a piece of chicken, a piece of broccoli, corn tortilla, and one other thing. So there is a way to do this that actually will save the average American consumer money."

Now come up with 84 meals per month, & enough servings for an entire family including growing young children. Maybe even for the occasional neighbor, friend, or family member who joins you for a meal. Run those simulations next. Remember it costs money to shop for, store, & cook food.

2026 has been very heavy for people across Minnesota.

Now, food access is being challenged from multiple angles with families staying home out of fear, children learning remotely & missing school meals, & new federal challenges that may threaten Minnesota’s access to SNAP benefits starting in Feb.

Let's say you have a family of 3 children and 2 adults. $3 meal x 5 =$15 x 3 meals per day = $45 x 30 days = $1350 a month. For the skimpiest meal ever, and I would bet this for sure means someone is cooking these from scratch and buying in bulk to get the goods at a "simulated" price.

For many children of hard working underpaid parents, school meals are the only meals they get during the week.

Screen time can come at the cost of reduced physical activity, increased BMI, fewer family meals together… also less sleep… watching educational shows can benefit children, but only those aged two and older… interaction with parents or caregivers remains crucial www.bbc.com/future/artic...
Why not all screen time is the same for children
Screens are a fixture in children's lives from a young age, but giving them access to television, tablets or phones doesn't always have a negative impact on their development.

My hardcore feminist position is that everything related to pregnancy and children should be free and on demand.

Prenatals, abortions, birth control, childcare, schooling, meals at schools, prophylactics, STD tests, whatever you can think of, if it can end in a child, it needs to be free.

Our own country lacks policy ideas that care about children during pregnancy and after. Republicans will let a woman bleed out in the parking lot and not approve basic meals or reality based education after.

Childcare is unaffordable when both parents have to work in an overpriced economy.

It’s infuriating and worrying how much these new guidelines could and probably will endanger children, through school meals and other federal programs, but also through their environmental impact (methane, for instance).
