Lan Xichen is the rightful heir!”

The lid had already been lifted, and Lan Wangji beheld the dragon guan of the Lan sect leader that he’d never seen before. His father had given it up long before Lan Wangji had been born, and Lan Qiren had refused to wear it. The entire sect was just waiting for the day that it would be passed to Lan Xichen, and now it would adorn Lan Wangji’s head. Lan Qiren began the rites of adulthood as he deftly pinned the guan in place. The words recited were the same as when Lan Xichen had gone through it, but Lan Wangji felt a different weight to them now, as they were accompanied by the responsibility of leadership and, perhaps, salvation. It was now Lan Wangji, and not the rules, that had to shoulder the weight of morality for an entire sect.

I have been to see Lan-daifu, and he has no concerns with my health.” Lan Qiren nodded. “We will all need to be attentive going forward, as your presentation is not one anyone could be familiar with.” His lips pinched briefly, and then he amended, “Well, perhaps Baoshan-sanren, but I doubt even this would bring her down from her mountain.”

“A possibility, yes,” Lan Xichen said almost petulantly. “But highly improbable. And now, you, well, your future will be quite different from what we all had imagined.” Lan Wangji pulled his hand away and reached for the remainder of his tea, frowning into the depths of the cup. Yes, this outcome was highly unexpected, but since it had always been a possibility, until his presentation proved otherwise, Lan Wangji had always kept the idea of such a future in the back of his mind. Truthfully, that future sometimes held the guise of a fantasy, especially during and after the war, when the luster of being clan-born and gentry had been scraped away and all that was left was hypocrisy and disillusionment. His brother was worried about his freedom. From his brother’s perspective, his presentation had all but shackled him to the Cloud Recesses and the sect for the foreseeable future. But with the supposed shackles also came power, which he’d never sought but which could now make that fantasy a reality.

He didn’t know that he subscribed to the same school of thought; it was a miracle that he’d survived his fall into the Burial Mounds, there was no convincing him otherwise. Was it a miracle, or did I teach you how to survive? His mother’s voice rang in his mind at the thought, and he laughed again. If she wasn’t a miracle worker, she was as close to it as possible.

He pulls it open and comes face to face with his best friend, the fucker who’d fucked off to who knew where years ago and just waltzed back into their lives like it was nothing literally yesterday. (He’d heard from his brother, who’d heard from Lan Huan, who’d heard from Meng Yao, who’d heard from Jin Zixuan, who’d opened the door of his surprisingly tastefully decorated townhome to find Wei Ying on the other side, and he’s a little upset that so many people had known before him. He was supposed to know everything!) He glares at Wei Ying. “What are you doing here?”

Lao Feng gave him a wry glance as he stood from the bedside. “If he was calling for something like that, Ying-er, he was calling for Yiling Laozu, not Wei Wuxian.” Wei Wuxian flinched. “Is there a difference?” Lao Feng shrugged. “To many, no. To those who matter, yes.” He gave Wei Wuxian a serious look. “We all sometimes do what’s necessary, even if it’s hard. Especially when it’s right. Try not to listen to those who want to make you into a monster. When it comes time to count up the merits, the Jade Emperor will know who to reward and who to punish.” Wei Wuxian huffed out a laugh. “You make it sound like you know him.”

The bartender eases over and leans forward to hear the guy’s order over the noise of the club. “Water, please,” the guy says, his voice smooth and deep. The bartender nods and turns away, and Wei Ying can’t help himself when he asks, “You’re just getting water?” The guy looks at him, his light-colored eyes doing a quick once-over that Wei Ying doesn’t miss, turns his body to face him, and says, “I don’t drink.” Wei Ying blinks. “Then why are you at the club?”

But returning to classes turned out to be a great idea, as they finally introduced something of interest to Wei Wuxian. There was a long, windowed wall of carved fretwork, and each window depicted the story of a Lan ancestor. There were four windows dedicated to Lan An, and while Wei Wuxian had grown up with these stories and descriptions of these carvings, it was fun to be able to see them in person. But he noticed that not one of the carvings was of his mother, who, by all rights, should be the most famous of the Lan ancestors, so as Lan Qiren led the disciples further down the wall, he elbowed Lan Wangji.

If you want them to halt strangers at the door, I suggest you train them better.” Wei Wuxian winced again. Ah, his mother was in a mood.

Wei Wuxian whistled as he brought down the hand shielding his eyes from the sun. They finally reached the top of the ascent to Cloud Recesses and the infamous wall of rules came in sight. He’d heard about it all through his childhood, but it really was something else to see in person. “The Lans must lead such dull, dreary lives,” he said and then yelped when a fan smacked into his chest.

And he turned right around and high-tailed it back to the gate while behind him Huaisang cried out, “Xian-di! We were just there!” They sure were, but traveling back to Caiyi for a little pre-lecture shopping was the best excuse he could think of for leaving Cloud Recesses right now. So, he merrily made his way down the mountain and into town and spent a couple of shi perusing the market and listening to the gossip. He purchased a large (to some) amount of spices and chili oil and several jars of Emperor’s Smile, all of which he stuffed into a qiankun pouch that he then stuffed into a qiankun pocket sewn into the inside of his underrobe in his best effort to bypass any scrutinizing visual search for contraband. (He thought Gusu Lan would be too prudish to think of searching someone’s underrobe for secret compartments, but he was sure he could talk himself out of danger if it came to that.)

Huaisang sighed beside him. “What was the one thing I asked you not to do, Xian-di?” “Lately?” Wei Wuxian asked with a laugh as he started for the dining hall. “Yes, lately!” Huaisang said with a huff as he hurried to catch up. “I asked you not to make a scene so soon and to not get involved with Lan Wangji!” “That’s two things.” “They’re related! Making a scene gets you punishment time with Lan Wangji. Getting Lan Wangji’s attention is making a scene.”

She took it from him and looked at it for a moment, her fingers trailing lightly over the length of it. He looked at it, too, noticing the spots of dirt and set-in grease that he hadn’t yet taken time to wash out, not overly obvious on the red fabric but noticeable against her pale fingers. Not that the dirty waters of Yiling would help much with that, but it was better than nothing. He ducked his head in embarrassment. “A-Ying is sorry it’s dirty,” he murmured. “No apologies needed, A-Ying,” she said quietly and pulled him gently back down so that she could tie up his hair. “Is this ribbon special to you?” Not really, he thought. At least, however long ago, it was just a ribbon. But now, it was the ribbon his father had bought him because he said he liked the color. It was the ribbon his mother used to tie up his hair every morning or pulled on to tease him as she laughed brightly. It and the robes on his back when Meilin-jie found him were the only things he had left of his parents.

Their father set his own cup down and then gave a slight sigh. “Qiren, Xichen, Wangji,” he addressed them, his eyes downcast. He folded his hands into his sleeves and placed them on his lap before looking up. “I have asked you to join me tonight because I have two things I would like to say. First, I will be leaving seclusion and stepping back into the role of sect leader by month’s end.” Shocked silence met this statement. It seemed no one had an immediate response, Lan Wangji least of whom. He did not know why his father had secluded himself all these years, but it had become so engrained in his understanding of the world that he didn’t know how to process the ending of it. “Xiongzhang,” Lan Qiren finally said, his brow furrowed in confusion. “Are you speaking the truth? Why now, after all these years?”

“So, you get the anchor with my name, and when you cast the spell, it’ll know to send it to me!” He grinned at Lan Wangji. “And when I cast the spell,” he continued as his eyes trailed down to the talisman in front of him, “It’ll send it to… Lan Zhan.” He blinked at the characters Lan Wangji had inked onto the talisman and uttered a soft, “Oh.” Then, when it finally caught up with him that he was staring at Lan Wangji’s birth name, the name he’d been after for weeks, he laughed joyfully and looked up to exclaim, “Lan Zhan!” “Mn,” the other boy said without looking up, and Wei Wuxian laughed. “You’re so sly, Lan Zhan. Not telling me until I won’t have very much time to use it! Ah, but maybe I still prefer ‘Lan-er-gege.’” “If you are shameless enough to still call me that, then I can’t stop you,” Lan Zhan said calmly, though he still wouldn’t meet Wei Wuxian’s eye.

I could perhaps avoid having to come here at all.” He closed his fan with a sudden movement and used it to poke Wei Wuxian in the side harshly. “And how will you be spending your time, if they let you stay?” Wei Wuxian changed his expression from exaggerated pain to exaggerated innocence. “What is this interrogation? I am here to learn, Sang-ge.” “Oh, I don’t doubt that at all,” Nie Huaisang countered easily. “I only want to know what knowledge you’ll be seeking, since we’ve already established it won’t be the recitation of the sects’ noble lineages and such.”

Wei Wuxian surveyed those gathered and immediately identified Jiang Wanyin’s family at the foremost positions – Jiang Fengmian, the Jiang sect leader, and Jiang Yanli, Jiang Wanyin’s older sister. The former looked very calm, and the latter looked very demure, but Wei Wuxian could tell from the way they held themselves and the visible smiles that they were very glad to have their son and brother home. He let his gaze drift over the rest of the assembled party, but no one struck him as being the formidable sect madam.

I’m not aware of any trade agreements or whatever that we get in exchange for the sect leader’s eldest daughter.” Then he turned his head and glared at Wei Wuxian. “So, you should come to Lotus Pier so that my dad can see that there are better choices out there.”
