We walked to the Nth entrance of the Maunga sanctuary, to find a place to bury my whare tangata and the pito of my moko. Together my eldest Moko and I dug a hole, saying karakia. We placed the taonga in, covered the box. My moko placed a rock on the top.

Heading up the trail to Taranaki Maunga (Mt. Egmont) from the plateau parking lot to a small ski field where we had a lovely picnic lunch. Taranaki is mighty, even in Summer without his magnificent white mantle of snow. The lower subalpine area is lush and green with native shrubs, trees, and flowers. Light clouds cling to the air as they pass in from of the mountain, wispy fingers against the blue sky. There are three people directly ahead of me on the trail, and further along, several others are setting their pace to the beat of their own drum, too.
