The decor on this Edwardian glove box was created by marquetry, inlaid pieces of coloured thin wood to create the unique pattern of blossom & House Martins. Exquisite.

An ornate Rococo-style longcase clock commands attention in a state room of Potsdam’s Neues Palais, its gilded carvings dramatically lit against deep red silk wall panels. The composition centers the clock as a vertical focal point, evoking tempus fugit through its elevated white enamel dial floating above swirling scrolls, foliage, and shell motifs. Rich gold ormolu frames the clock’s body, with asymmetrical Rococo details like masks and cartouches enhancing its sculptural presence. Patterned veneer suggests fine marquetry, while the circular dial features black Roman hour numerals, Arabic minutes, and slender hands within a beaded bezel. The clock integrates seamlessly with the room’s gilded moldings and parquet floor, the crimson backdrop amplifying its opulent silhouette. This placement underscores the Neues Palais’s Baroque grandeur, built by Frederick the Great post-Seven Years’ War as a symbol of Prussian power.

A circa 1795 Directoire mahogany three-tier étagère with three blue tarquin marble surfaces and two pairs of spring-loaded drawers on opposite sides. Each of the four supports has four neoclassical fluted pilasters ending in toupee feet with gilt bronze sabots. Stamped by Jean-François Leleu. (ALT)
MEASUREMENTS 46 1/4” (117.5 cm) in height, 24 1/4” (61.5 cm) wide, 20 1/4” (51.5 cm) deep. PROVENANCE Christie’s, New York, Sale 19201, Dalva Brothers: Parisian Taste in New York, 22 October 2020, lot 133. Born in Paris, Jean-François Leleu (1729-1807) apprenticed with Jean-Henri Riesener and Martin Carlin at Jean-François Oeben’s workshop at the Arsenal. He left after Oeben’s death in 1763 and became a master ébeniste in September 1764. Later he established a large workshop on the rue Royale-Saint-Antoine (now rue Birague) south of the Place des Vosges. His clients included the Prince de Condé, Duc d’Uzès and the Marquis de Laborde, the Court banker. His specialty was marquetry, but often as decoration on architectural and neoclassicist designs. This example shows his later penchant for sober neoclassicism long after establishing himself as one of the finest cabinet makers in the Louis XVI style. Stamped on the top corner J.F. LELEU, also with two paper labels, one inscribed Pieter, the other J. Quentain. A view of the interior drawers below the marble top, the spring-loaded drawers pop out when a button is pressed underneath. In the corner, piled with "stuff": Meissen porcelain decorated in the kakiemon style.

Today I've been practising (improving) my wood marquetry skills. For humour value, and because it's a silly fiddly letter, I've been using "A", so I'm looking at a piece of wood that says "AAAAAAAAAAAAA" and giggling to myself.

(I may be the only person who finds this funny 🤷‍♀️)

A white bathtub sits in a log cabin bedroom. Tapestry inspired wallpaper in bright chartreuse, hot pink, burnt orange, and teal trees covers the walls. An antique wardrobe with detailed marquetry and an orange, purple, and blue Persian rug are also in the room. A mahogany island with apothecary drawers and a green and pink quartzite top sits in the middle of a log cabin kitchen. It is covered in containers of fruit and vegetables. 3 stools sit in front of it. A Stained-glass window is above a green quartzite backsplash. The hood surround is a mahogany art nouveau style wood appliqué. The cabinets are cream.
