In the EXTREMELY unlikely event I ever get elevated to the red benches, I've always been unable to decide which part of Calderdale I would be Baroness Rigg of

Have a few lovely ones from near me

Two of the guys from The League Of Gentlemen come from Todmorden. That tells you a lot about the place.

And back to the place names, just outside Tod there are Lumbutts, Mankinholes, and Cornholme.

But I want to be of Jumble Dyke!

... or maybe Lumbutts.

... or Mankinholes

Has to be somewhere in Calderdale anyway. Unless I can have Whitby Abbey?

I don't think she would like Lumbutts and Mankinholes, she certainly would bridle at being a member of Ugley Women's Institute and I guess she would not like to live in Nasty.

Folklore, Facts and Fables 5: the Eve Stone is up for pre-order. The zine is a folk story from Todmorden about a petty thief called Rob o’Harry’o’t’Deans, who gets his comeupppance after blaming this crimes on others.
The music is sort of desert blues based around a 3 string fretless guitar thing…

I must mention Lumbutts and Mankinholes here.

As I posted elsewhere yesterday here is another event from 1838. Archaeologist and author Laura Morfoot tells the story of the Mankinholes Poor Law riot. After 2 constables were beaten out of the village naked the riots spread to Todmorden.

The striking gravestone of Gilbert Lacy & his wife Anna at the Methodist graveyard at Mankinholes nr Todmorden. In the 1851 Census, Gilbert Lacy was recorded as an accountant. In 1861 he was a cotton spinner employing 200 hands. Lacy House is at Underbank near Charlestown, SW from Hebden Bridge.

Not many burial grounds have a better view than the Methodist burial ground at Mankinholes near Todmorden, West Yorkshire.

the communities of Langfield, Mankinholes & Lumbutts. The chapel was demolished in 1979 due to a structural defect. In the 1980's the Sunday School was converted into a house with the burial ground next door. /2

If you have time & the inclination I can recommend a visit to the small hamlets around Todmorden; full of history & amazing scenery. The Old Sunday School at Mankinholes near Todmorden, W. Yorks was built from subscription in 1833. It complemented the Methodist chapel built in 1814 to serve /1

So, regrettably, we are not going to see Lord Pack Of Barchartia...

Lord Pack of Cowley Street would be a bit niche (and dated)...

In the EXTREMELY unlikely event I am ever sent to the Red Benches I would have a very difficult choice between Jumble Dyke, Lumbutts, and Mankinholes.

I think it was the climb up either Luddenden or possibly the one up from Tod to Mankinholes where you can carry on over Blackstone Edge and eventually come back over Summit if you want a strenuous but great round, and in neither case is taking a van up there enjoyable. It’s not even nice in a car!

Thank you! Yes, I did that on a cold drizzly autumn day, and I don't think I got to appreciate the scenery. I'm slowly colouring in the map of 'places I've cycled'... Mankinholes can wait for another day.
