Finally managed to visit this monument, dedicated to the last aurochs, hunted outside Warsaw nearly 400 years ago.
Since we're well into the 6th mass extinction, there must be some memorialization for other bygone species, right?

Two birds previously lost to science, the Sira Barbet and Peruvian Solitaire, were recently observed in Peru during an expedition led by the NGO GECO Nature in July 2024. 🪶

On #LostSpecies day, worth reflecting on what we've lost locally.
E.g. Round-leaved Sundew (Drosera rotundifolia). It's insectivorous, and lives in very low nutrient wetlands. Last recorded in Lye Valley in 1964, now extinct in Oxon.
We hope to get it back one day...
