Ego: I use my space here on bluesky as a kind of diary/reference book and also for good exchanges of opinions. I can always learn more. It's a jump from and to my many areas of interest. And it helps my sometimes failing memory 🙃.

Jamen, Chr.

Israel has begun building a concrete wall inside Lebanon near the border with occupied Palestine, as part of a U.S.-backed Israeli plan disguised as a “ceasefire agreement” noting that Israel has breached the agreement everday since it started.

Why is Veterans Day on Nov. 11? It was originally Armistice Day, commemorating the signing of the armistice between the Allies and Germany ending World War I. The armistice was signed on Nov. 11 and took effect at 11 a.m. — the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month. /1

Armistice Day is still celebrated in many countries. Just before and after WWII, however, several countries changed the name to honor all veterans in all wars. In the U.K. and Commonwealth countries, it is known as Remembrance Day and is marked by two minutes of silence at 11 a.m. /2

In the U.S., the name was changed to Veterans Day in 1954. The Uniform Monday Holiday Act of 1968 moved Veterans Day to the fourth Monday in October. In 1978, it was moved back to Nov. 11 to coincide with commemorations held around the world. /3

In the late 1890s, Wilmington had a thriving Black community and a biracial “Fusion” government (a coalition of Republicans and Populists) in which Black citizens held various elected positions. This was met with a statewide white supremacy campaign to eliminate Black political participation. /2

The campaign involved propaganda, intimidation and the threat of violence to deter African Americans from voting on Nov. 8, 1898. Two days after the election, an estimated 2,000 armed white men marched to the office of The Daily Record, the local Black-owned newspaper, and set it on fire. /3
