Sweet Gum tree (Liquidambar styraciflua).

How about a tree with great fall color that doesn’t get any respect? Sweetgum (Liquidambar styraciflua) has fantastic colors – often on the same tree! Yellows, pinks, oranges, purples – what a kaleidoscope of color. Liquidambar is the sole genus in the Altingiaceae family. (1/2) #nativeplants

In CA we call them Liquidambar. I have no idea why.

It looks like either Acer rubrum (Red maple/swamp maple) or Liquidambar styraciflua (Sweetgum)
The growth habit looks more like Maple than Sweetgum to me.
Hard to tell without a good close up of leaves and buds.

There is a strange light glow on the building next door, the buildings down the street. Trees are green (pines) and red (a liquidambar) and the lower reaches of Mt. Tam are visible!

Look, it’s been a long few days with no sunshine, nothing but tule fog.

The tree is also called Liquidambar. I read that the birds love to eat the inside of the thorny seed pod. Not sure how they get to the center without getting stabbed.

Two new trees bought for the garden, hopefully I’ll live to see the Liquidambar reach its 10 metre height 🍁

Liquidambar was introduced into this country so far back as 1683 but has never yet attained a comparable height here and may confidently be planted as a sort of exclamation mark of autumn’s dying farewell for it grows upright and pointed like a poplar. #gardening

Nov ‘53 The red leaves have nearly all gone now. The Liquidambar still retains some in a variegation of red-and-green; they cling on for so long that they might be glued on. #gardening
