I was wrong — it was the last direct bus until 7:22 am!

Took me about 14 minutes to get what’s normally a 20-25-minute trip.

The weather is beautiful for late December. 5° C, no clouds, no wind. Perfect humidity.

For #PhycologyFriday, some Desmarestia aculeata (and a frosted nudibranch, if you look closely) just offshore here in Lekwungen territory (Victoria, Vancouver Island). Unlike the highly acidic species the Desmarestia genus is better known for, this one grows over winter & persists for multiple years

For #PhycologyFriday, a Bull Kelp bed at the end of its season here in Lekwungen Territory (Victoria, BC). Though these sporophytes will soon disappear, the kelp bed will persist microscopically over the winter in the form of billions of gametophytes, probably growing from dropped spores right now!

Seeking a youth bike for neighbor family I’m tight with. Their 9 yr old boy is growing so fast!

For #PhycologyFriday, some late-season Bull Kelp I saw on a freedive this week, still pumping out spore-bearing sori despite the approach of winter

For #PhycologyFriday, a Gloiocladia laciniata growing on a stalk of kelp here in the territories of Lekwungen peoples (Victoria, BC). There's not much info I could find online about this red alga's striking color, but I enjoyed seeing a bunch of their scintillating blue blades on a snorkel this week

Community Food Support is desperately seeking more Back-End Volunteers to keep the program alive.

We deliver 80+ free food hampers to recipients in #YYJ each week from the Quadra Village Community Centre gym, but much takes place behind the scenes beforehand to make that possible.

Daytime Council begins, with Mayor Alto reaffirming the loss of Elder Dr Elmer Seniemten George. She says he was the last fluent speaker of Lekwungen. He translated the Douglas Treaties into SENĆOŦEN, and has had a key role in the renaming of Su'it St and naming the sxʷeŋxʷəŋ təŋəxʷ Library branch.

Mayor Alto kicks off COTW for Thursday, October 23. Begins with honouring Elder Dr Elmer Seniemten George of the Songhees Nation; we have just lost one of the last fluent Lekwungen speakers and a beloved light. There are not enough characters here to note all he has done.
