The Civil War Soldiers' Monument by the Cathedral of St. Paul looks just a standard dude on a column, but getting up close the language on the plaques is pretty satisfyingly punchy

We need to stop illegal immigration, but this language is unhelpfully divisive. Mahmoud should read Jo Cox’s “more in common” speech again

Of course, there are plenty of reasons to bother, but I think this gives me a better understanding of why certain decisions are made: newsflash, Hollywood is horrendously risk-averse! Hence why Cameron would skimp on a Tulkun language, and why Na'vi got so much less screen time in Avatar II:

The new insight I got is that making a language "real" makes it possible for a line to be "right" or "wrong", and that makes it a risk. When there is a human performance at stake, it is potentially seen as a risk more worth taking, but if a human won't perform it, why bother?

Had a lovely conversation with Britton Watkins (who recently produced the Yautja language for Predator: Badlands) on this topic yesterday, and it has caused me to rethink how to target my Standard Rant first best results. (And made me even more skeptical of the prospect of PHM getting it right.)

Laney: By 1962, the rhetoric shifted. The NRC now framed refugee placements as a way to address broader shortages in scientific manpower. Pursuit of that goal led to updated admission criteria & new language training and recertification initiatives.

Language ability: Being able to quickly generate a list of swear words is associated with being able to quickly generate lists of other words, like animal names. This indicates good language fluency, which is linked to intelligence.

@deafqueer.bsky.social I'm trans and queer, and I am semi-fluent in sign language. I would love to help out in the deaf queer community in my area. Do you have any advice on where to start?

Not everyone can understand your language like using "BTW", "BRB", "SAA" and many other such type of short words.

Sounds like there might be a cultural / language barrier — “AT WHAT COST?” is a pretty typical American English joke that isn’t asking about the actual financial cost (I‘m in an apartment where hot water is included in rent) and instead jokingly complaining that something is unpleasant or difficult.

Strong language incoming…

If it’s possible to make money by being a little cunt like this, then there is something seriously wrong with the world.

Parents, if your kids watch this kind of shit, you need to do a better job.

I use @svelte.dev and it exposes a `URLSearchParams` object with a `has` function (developer.mozilla.org/en-US/docs/W...)

Each dialog has this to open/close based on the URL query string:

let dialogOpen = $derived(page.url.searchParams.has('settings'));
URLSearchParams: has() method - Web APIs | MDN
The has() method of the URLSearchParams interface returns a boolean value that indicates whether the specified parameter is in the search parameters.
