Inside the craft, A Squishy by a window reports to Quallen "Mr. Quallen, Sir! The landlife are still following us!"

Quallen, at his seat, turns his head to the Squishy and growls "Ugh… these fuzzballs are PERSISTENT!"
Quallen mumbles under his breath "And I thought cats were supposed to hate water…"

Quallen grabs the microphone attached to his seat and exclaims "ATTENTION, BELLSPIDER CREW! THE ENEMY IS APPROACHING. INITIATE OFFENSE, IMMEDIATELY!"

Inverters in the pilot room respond "Yes, Mr. Quallen, Sir!"

Outside, the BellSpider launches out torpedos. The torpedos start propelling towards Cyder and Nixie.

Cyder thinks to himself "So they want to play, huh?"

Cyder and Nixie dodge and swim out of the way of the oncoming torpedos.

This section of the report was really interesting. The first bit agreed with my understanding, that you should wait a decade or three and fill in the gaps later, and all our woodlands are 0-4yr so ignore. But the second section is an interesting idea RE seeding on creation. Will send to ecologist.

Planted woodland after canopy closure
This is the most usual situation and includes all ages of woodland. In the case of older woods (say 30+ years old), there is a good case for going ahead immediately with translocations.
For young woods (10 - 30 years) it can be useful to wait and see what happens with the passage of time, then consider the need for translocations. Having said that, for owners keen to progress the colonisation of woodland plants, careful translocations can be beneficial at any stage; this can simply be thought of as reinforcing natural colonisation processes.
Note that some heavily stocked, un-thinned woods, especially if they include some sycamore or beech, can be too shady for most plant species to establish and will need thinning (see Competing vegetation on woodland creation sites section).

It is technically feasible to establish plants when the trees are young, but have not closed canopy; but this is the least desirable time point, because weedy vegetation will have become established and it will be several years before this starts to decline due to shading.

Establishing woodland plants by seeding at the time of planting is a useful option in sites on highly modified agricultural soils and where persistent competitive 'weedy' ground cover is likely to develop. This can be done using the relatively cheap small scale approach set out in this guidance, or by more intensive but expensive methods such as soil inversion and complete re-seeding (Landlife 2006). Species that thrive only in deep shade should probably not be translocated at this stage (see table 2).

I worked on tall ships (historical sailing vessels) for >10 yrs and have a captain's license for them (plus mate's license & AB (able seaman credential)). But somehow I have fallen into landlife in recent years, esp. as my favorite boats have stopped sailing for a variety of reasons 😬
