Y'know that extremely stereotypical martial arts master trope? Little Asian man who's like four foot nothing, a billion years old, and cracks you on the ankles with his cane if your form is off?

sorry but I'm gonna have to disagree on this one. Not historically accurate enough to my taste for an AC game also I feel like they've lost the point and have become like every other RPG and not even about assassins anymore. Also the katana movements are making my Iaidoka heart bleed

Apropos of my haiku about it earlier this week, I have been thinking about the concept of enzan no metsuke - gazing at distant mountains - and what it means to relax your focus like that when facing someone with a sword. #iaido
Text from the book Flashing Steel Eishin-Ryu is not concerned with which of these theories is right, because it uses enzan no metsuke (eyes fixed on distant mountains). By viewing the opponent with the same slightly out-of-focus eyesight we use when viewing a panorama of distant scenery, with the eyes directed at about the level of the adversary's solar plexus, our vision encompasses the entire person. In this way, we can watch our adversary's eyes, hands, el-bows, hips, and feet all at the same time. This method also prevents us from being duped by an eye-fake or a distracting hand movement, because the positions of the hips, elbows, and feet will betray any deception attempted by the rest of the body. The Eishin-Ryu iaidoka only reacts when the opponent's whole body reveals his true intentions.
