“Your tale—’twas true?” “Some.” “Tell me what ye seen.” “I fear I will anger the dead girl’s spirit.” “I have reason—same monsther killed me two sisthers.” Maguire’s voice snagged on monster, lest he summon it. The African grimaced. “The people of Maghera hid me as my wounds healed. Protected me from the whaleboat men who would do me harm.” Something distant weighed down his voice. “I remember the morning—land thick with mist, a good time to move about. I became like a ghost, trying not to wake the living.” A scant shake of his head. “Then I saw her.” He fell silent, pensive, as though remembering a punishing sight. “On the road—naked in the mud, arms and legs flung like a great falcon had dropped her. Throat cut—‍” His sinews tensed. “And eyes taken. Her body had no blood—skin without color.” Maguire swallowed hard. “Like a sea-pig.” “The same.” Luluwa dipped his head. “I told them the horse was a demon-horse, but what tracks I saw—‍” He half-shrugged, as if ashamed. “Belonged to an ordinary horse—except for the shoes.” Maguire’s heart leapt. “How so?” “Never saw such horseshoes.” Conall scratched his stubbled chin. “A man hasn’t the habit of studying horse tracks. Will ye help me draw what ye seen?” The African pushed out his lips and hummed. “Maybe a blacksmith sees the world not as you. To an ant, water in a coconut shell is an ocean. That is what we say.” A breath. “The shoes . . . I had never seen that shape. But I will show you.” “We’ll sketch it when we get back aboard. What know yez of Algiers? Jean says we’ll run past at night, so there’s some hazard.” “Laylat al-Jumu’ah, ships will be few. Our Sabbath.”

Photo of my Tablet PC Thingie. On screen is the less serious anthro Horse Girl from a recent sketch. Her right hand and most of her arm is inked in blue. The two fingered hand is seen post-snap even though I don't think her hoof like fingers could physically pull that off. there is a Scene in the first book of Wolves of Danu that scares me solely because I'm actually gonna have to draw it.
an extremely rough sketch of a werewolf pouncing on a kelpie who was about to bring it's front hooves down on a human character that's been knocked prone on their back. The kelpie is a horse composed of grasping, severed human arms and hands, some of which are holding the horse's severed head in place (atop where its neck would be), and some which are stretching a too-small pelt over its back. From within the exposed, shadowy chest cavity, there are small pin-points of light suggesting the light-refracting pupils of creatures staring out from within. Hands reach out from under the horse, grasping towards the prone character.

I had some further Thoughts(tm) about this. Specifically on how to build centaurs.

The upper torso is neck, the rib cage is a ginormous and highly specialized hyoid apparatus, specifically to support the arms (with a side job as housing an air sac for precision control for speech).
OH BOY, how am I gonna describe this one. Uh. A sketch page on centaur anatomy. Special notes include slopy back (uphill spine to support the upper "torso"), narrow shoulder blades for the arms, several diagrams depicting the hyoid rib cage (I googled "horse hyoid" and was delighted to find a complex bone apparstus with a lot of potential and proceeded to have fun molding it). The back part of the hyoid-rib-thingy is a singular, enlargened vertebra (do not reference the shape, I just slapped something on it, the important bit is that it is a singular bone). No collar bones. The lower rib cage has its sternum protrude slightly up to the front to protect the heart, which is located high in a similar manner as the heart of giraffe. Hands and arms are slender and light, with vedtigial pinky fingers. Mane grows down along the spine from the head all the way down to withers. There's one full body action pose of a centaur, and also a detailed drawing of the head. Ears are long, pointy and narrow, eyes are big and have big irises, nose is huge and wide with big nostrils. The entire thing is FLUFFY.

Up next are all of the SFTR characters! Since I don't have updated art for most of the characters from the first two stories chronologically, I'm starting off with the 1800s protagonist, Coltrane!
Coltrane is the main protagonist of Seldom Flows the River 1887. After running away from home in his early teen years, he was taken in by a gang and began his life of crime. As the years passed, tensions within the gang began to escalate drastically due to their leader's mysterious behavioral changes, causing Coltrane to take a risky chance to separate from the group by faking his own death. With nowhere else to go, he returns to his childhood home, only to discover that both of his parents have died and left his older brother Dakota to inherit the farm. Coltrane refuses to admit that he ever made any mistakes or regrets any of his life decisions, hiding any grief he experiences in a bottle of whiskey. He uses quick-witted, sarcastic remarks to deflect any criticisms of his character, but deep down he knows that he has nobody to blame but himself for how his life turned out. Even though he would never admit it, he would give anything to go back to the day he ran away so he could come back home.
