#HillfortWednesday @richardosgood.bsky.social @martynjb.bsky.social @drtobydriver.bsky.social Recent photos up Sidbury Hill hillfort on the Salisbury Plain Training Area. The last 2 show clearly the Bronze Age "double linear" earthwork meeting the NW corner of it.

Houndtor Medieval Settlement, Dartmoor. The remains of a small farming community and manor, abandoned in the C14th probably due to crop failures and the Black Death. Photos from last summer.
Again, not quite #HillfortWednesday (can’t get the hang of this guys)

My #hillfortwednesday is Barbury Castle in Wiltshire. With stone circles and giant horses, there's so much history in these rolling hills.

Today's obviously the last #HillfortWednesday of the year, so here's a couple of pics from yesterday's walk around the impressive Iron Age earthworks of Woodbury Castle

Neither a hill nor a fort for the final #HillfortWednesday of the year, more of an Iron Age house on a mountain. Still fascinating and beautifully constructed, though you might want to be shorter than 5’6” 🤕

One of the best things on bluesky lately: all of the #boardgames posts! Along with #hillfortwednesday and enough #nfl posts to make it impossible to open bluesky if I have recorded a game for later… and fierce debates over #survey experiments and political science #methods! This place has it!

I follow football pretty closely, but I’ve also come to appreciate the shared technical interests with the stats communities (analysis, data visualization, etc.). So that’s a favorite, and kind of a double. In other areas of interest, I also really love #hillfortwednesday.

Happy #HillfortWednesday.

1). The ‘hollow way’ leading to the flat top of #LewesdonHill, 2). the site of an #Ironage settlement. The hill’s naturally steep (Northern) side and the manmade ditch and ramparts of its less steep side provided refuge in times of threat, not to mention great views.

Although unearthed from Mount Batten, Plymouth, this coin originated in Dorset. I saw this in The Box and immediately thought of @durotrigesdig.bsky.social - some numismatics for #HillfortWednesday

Eketorp on Öland is the only fully excavated and reconstructed hillfort in Sweden. It was used both during the Iron Age and Middle Ages. It has been estimated that it was built by and for 20 households. It had permanent settlement at the end of Iron Age. #HillfortWednesday

Splendid reconstruction at Tustan Fortress in the #Ukrainian #Carpathians – not of the fort, but of the camp made by the archaeologists who investigated it in 1970. Material culture and way of life authentically represented; Volga in surprisingly good nick #HillfortWednesday

Bygdeborg or Bruceborg hill fort lies in Väskinde parish on Gotland. It is 100 x 60 squaremetres in size and defended by steep cliffs in north and west and by a 92 metres long, 3 metres wide and 0.5 metres high. Inside the fort are lime pits. #HillfortWednesday

#HillfortWednesday Distant view of Sidbury Hill which dominates Salisbury Plain East of the River Avon. An exposed place, capped with Reading Formation geology. It forms the focus for a number of Bronze Age linear ditches.
