While performing routine underwater repairs, one diver noticed an octopus hovering nearby. At first, he dismissed it as simple curiosity. But soon, the creature began doing something remarkable. Each time the diver reached for a wrench or bolt, a tentacle would extend, offering it as though the octopus already knew what he needed. When a tool slipped from his grip, the octopus retrieved it and calmly placed it back in his hand, like an assistant from the deep. Skeptical colleagues dismissed his account, so the diver set up cameras. The resulting footage, showing an octopus patiently handing over tools, quickly went viral, sparking fascination around the world. When asked about the experience, the diver simply smiled and said: "I'm just happy I had help down there."

There’s a viral video going around right now of Gene Hackman on Inside the Actor’s Studio recounting the last time he saw his father when he was thirteen years old. Host James Lipton frequently took a chronological approach when interviewing subjects about their life and their career, because he believed that the incidents of a life informed the type of actor that a person would become. Sometimes this made Inside the Actor’s Studio feel like therapy as much as it was an analysis of an actor’s career. The abandonment that Hackman felt as a teenager when his father left him is the first thing that Lipton wanted to discuss. He appears a little blind-sided by beginning here, choking back tears, and resituating his emotions, before brushing it off, “it’s only been 65 years”, Hackman tells to a smattering of laughter. Perhaps this has struck a chord with viewers who loved Hackman, because it’s strange to see him off-balance and unsure of what to say. He was the type of actor who grounded movies in a blue-collar realism of the types of guys we all know, sitting at bars, driving buses, uncles, fathers, any number of modest things men do to keep on living. But here with Lipton, he’s a child again, for a moment, transported all the way back to a pickup baseball game, interrupted by his father waving to him for the last time. Hackman liked to say that his father taught him something about acting on that day, “small gestures mattered”, but he doesn’t have words right now. He pauses, reflects, and his voice cracks a little, but it might as well be a fissuring of a great tectonic plate for this man who was usually so composed. He never stopped thinking about his father. None of us ever do. Not really. Hackman sometimes played men whose fathers fucked up their lives, or fathers who fucked up the lives of their children. It’s a bit ironic that he was better at playing the father who failed, rather than the son who was wounded, but maybe the distance allowed him to better inhabit a scenario he was otherwise familiar with. Hackman’s acting teacher George Morrison taught him key lessons that he took to every role, and Hackman was happy to elaborate on what these were when young actors asked him about his process. He asked himself simple questions, “How am I like this character?” and “How am I not like this character?”. It seems so straight-forward, but Hackman was always the type of actor who revealed things in a straight-forward manner. He was a method actor of the common-sense variety, who used the technique of effective memory to guide him through any scene. He said that sometimes the results of the technique were unexpected and surprising, but the answers were always inside of himself. He had a lot of respect for method actors, famously friendly with Dustin Hoffman, both of whom were deemed “least likely to succeed” by their Pasadena Playhouse players. At the very end of Hackman’s career, he played a father who failed his family in The Royal Tenenbaums. It’s a personal role that doesn’t feel like a personal role, and Hackman imbued this character with the same forcefulness, seething anger, and intensity that were his trademarks, but applied with a light, airy touch of deft comic understanding that slowly transforms into a performance of bittersweet tragedy.
